2 Fact sheet for Cambridgeshire House prices increase as there is more demand for homes in the region. The increasing value of houses in Cambridgeshire is rising 18% year on year, the highest rate outside of London. High prices for homes forces first time buyers out of the area due to a lack of affordable housing. Schools have increasing roll numbers of students, therefore class sizes may increase to cope with demand of families moving into the area. A reduction in agricultural production as farmers sell their land off to housing developers for money and higher profits. Increasing amounts of private vehicles on the rural roads is causing congestion and there is less demand for bus services. This area has some of the highest prices for petrol and diesel, due to local demand from commuters travelling to and from work, to places like London and Cambridge. Many of the new population are made up of poor migrant workers from Europe, this puts pressure on local public services like schools, social housing and education. Modern housing developments on the edge of towns and villages lead to a loss of community spirit, as commuters use services at their place of work, rather than locally to where they live. 4 Fact sheet for the Outer Hebrides House prices decrease as there is less demand for homes in the region. Local services such as bus routes, Post Offices and libraries close down due to a lack of demand and decreased funding from council tax contributions. Schools have less students enrolling, as families move away. This results in primary schools closing due to lack of funding. School rolls have declined significantly since 1975 across the Outer Hebrides The birth rate reduces, as an ageing population is left behind whilst the younger generations are likely to move to larger cities on Stornoway. Local businesses may be forced to raise their prices to stay open, or face closure, as there are fewer customers around to buy from them. As local businesses are forced to close, this leads to higher rates of unemployment and the local economy goes into decline. Employers in the Outer Hebrides are turning to overseas migrant workers to fill skills gaps as the working population reduces. Gender imbalance in rural communities as young women move out and young male migrant workers move in. There are acknowledged labour shortages in several employment sectors including professional posts in education and health, and in semiskilled jobs in food production and hospitality The ageing population will have greater needs for health and social services while there will be fewer workers to provide them. 6 Social and economic changes in rural Britain Teacher notes Starter: Students write geographically to locate the Outer Hebrides and Cambridgeshire in their books at a national, regional and local scale. Higher level groups should be prompted to include longitude and latitude locations and use the atlas independently to pick out nearby places such as local towns and cities. Use the images on slides 4 and 5 to prompt discussion on why populations might be changing in these two areas. For example: Cambridgeshire has renowned universities, is close to London, therefore many jobs, and well contacted to major motorways, such as the M11. The Outer Hebrides is a remote and isolated place to live, possibly with few jobs besides the fishing industry, with steep uneven terrain. Main task: Team teach activity: Split the class into pairs and nominate one person A and B. They then must complete the Venn diagram on either Cambridgeshire or the Outer Hebrides to identify the social and economic impacts of population change in their given area. Venn diagrams are popular visual tools for classifying impacts, however if students have not used them before, there is a simple explanation on the slide. Students should use the information sheet about their chosen place and paraphrase the points made, then write them into the appropriate part of the Venn diagram. The extension activity is about linking the Venn diagram statements together to explain how impacts are linked together. After about minutes on this activity the students A and B tell each other what they have learned about their area and notes can be made on the team teach record sheet in the appropriate section. Team teach tasks are a good way to promote independent learning as they are responsible for part of the lesson and the knowledge gained. Plenary: Keyword link activity: Students must choose two keywords from this lesson or a previous lesson and link them to the learning for today. This encourages students to use higher level vocabulary in their oral communication. If time allows, students could be asked to share their keyword learning link with the rest of the class Page 6 of 6
