2 The European Passengers Federation founded in 2002 the European umbrella organisation of national and regional passengers organisations financed by its member organisations representing passengers views at the European level dealing with all modes of public transport maintaining the Journeys Without Borders report since member organisations 20 countries
3 Introduction The accession of Central and Eastern European countries to the EU and especially the Schengen Area has created a unique opportunity for cross-border commute. It became much easier to cross the intra-european borders when travelling by car or plane, and these modes of transports has been thriving ever since. Crossing the border by means of public transport has, however, not become easier and in some cases the situation even worsened.
4 The regular passengers perspective on efficient crossborder connections A cross-border connection highly useable by passengers should have the following characteristics: Services at regular intervals Integrated timetable with both countries Service at least the nearest major town on both sides of the border instead of only the border station Pricing on par with domestic services for a comparable distance Seamless integration of operators if more than one operator is involved, especially in customer care

9 Conclusions Regional services on the two sides of the border should be coordinated Domestic fares should be extended up to the border crossing If an operator receives public funding, it should be made a condition that cross-border services are maintained EU funding should be available not only for cross-border infrastructure development, but also the maintenance of services in the inaugural period (3-5 years) Central and Eastern European countries have strong ties to each other and a properly integrated transport network would be beneficial to all
