20 The Mediterranean: an increasing risk for Europe (2) Although the Mediterranean represents only 0,7% of the planet s seas, 25 30% of the global hydrocarbons traffic around 400 tons per year cross its waters. As many as 300 tankers operate every day in the Mediterranean sea 2000 ships weighing more than 100 tons each. As much as 40% of the petroleum traffic in the Mediterranean transits across the Italian harbors in particular Cagliari, Genoa, Augusta-Priolo, Trieste, Ravenna and Venice.

21 The Baltic sea: a risk to monitor The Baltic Sea is the main trade route for export of Russian petroleum. Many of the Baltic Sea s neighboring countries have been concerned about this, since a major oil leak from a seagoing tanker would be disastrous for the Baltic area - given the limited water circulation. The tourism industry surrounding the Baltic Sea is naturally concerned about oil pollution.
