1 2017/2018 Year in Review The Latino Migration Project celebrates its eleventh anniversary providing research and public education about migration and integration in North Carolina 156 UNC students have studied in Mexico with LMP programs since 2006

2 Global learning The Latino Migration Project provides academic opportunities for UNC undergraduate and graduate students to study migration. In March 2018, APPLES Global Course Guanajuato returned to Mexico for with 12 undergraduate and graduate students to study migration and reconnect with host communities. This year, the course and trip focused on a new theme of migration and climate change. Students also contributed more than 300 hours of public service with local organizations that work with immigrants and refugees. UNC student Rosario Villa learns how women in the migratory community of Trancas started a cooperative bakery Students with financial need receive travel scholarships. In 2017, the LMP awarded more than $3500 to students with financial aid from different campus units. For some, this is a first trip abroad. 3 Interdisciplinary and community driven-research In 2017 and 2018, the LMP s Building Integrated Communities initiative conducted a participatory research assessment with the Towns of Chapel Hill and Siler City to better understand the experiences of immigrant and refugees. Participants included Chapel Hill residents representing nearly all regions of the globe. UNC students played a vital role in the research and public meeting process, gaining qualitative methods and facilitation skills. This assessment will drive local government and community plans to support the integration of immigrant and refugee residents. A Chapel Hill resident provides recommendations about building leadership opportunities for refugees in local government. Chapel Hill Town Councilmember Allan Buansi speaks at a public meeting with immigrant and refugee residents organized by the LMP. Behind him stand interpreters of Arabic, Spanish, Karen, Burmese, and Russian languages.

4 Oral History The New Roots/Nuevas Raíces Latino Oral History initiative was was featured in the Smithsonian Anacostia Community Museum as part of the award-winning Gateways exhibit. The article Migration and inclusive transnational heritage: Digital innovation and the New Roots Latino Oral History Initiative, written by LMP staff Hannah Gill, Maria Ramirez, and Laura Villa Torres (with Jaycie Vos) was accepted by The Oral History Review for publication. LMP staff visited the Laboratorio de Historia Oral at the University of Guanajuato in the spring of 2018 to strengthen connections between UNC and UGTO. UNC students will submit a total of 15 oral histories with immigrants and Latina/o/x North Carolinians will be archived in the New Roots/Nuevas Raíces collection. The Smithsonian Gateways Exhibit collaborated with the Latino Migration Project to share the stories of NC s Latino communities Felicia Arriaga, Hannah Gill, Carlos Sandoval, Karla Rivera Nieto and Ada Marina Lara Meza at the University of Guanajuato in March 2018

5 Campus Resource The Latino Migration Project is a resource for the UNC community to integrate migration studies into courses, public programming, and outreach to North Carolina communities and Latin America. In 2017/2018 we supported faculty and departments/curricular programs to develop courses with global migration content and provided supervision, mentorship, internships, and independent studies for undergraduate and graduate students. UNC students gain experience teaching English as a Second Language with middle school students in Trancas, Mexico

6 Public Engagement The Latino Migration Project organized 26 public events related to migration, integration, public policy, oral history, and Latin American and Latina/o/x studies. We engaged more than 1300 people across the state in ten NC counties.
