1 Name: Date: An Island Divided: Haiti & Dominican Republic One World Ambassador: Andre Sanabia Unit Resource #2: Understanding the Experience Directions: Preview the following questions before you read the Reflection. Identify key words in the questions (you can underline them for quick reference). As you read, pay attention for those key words so that you will know where to look for the answers when you are finished reading. Some of the answers are not in the Reflection, as they require you to connect your own personal experience to the text. It is important to know which kind of question you are answering. Multiple Choice Questions 1. The Haitian workers, Andre refers to on his drive with his family from Punta Cana to Santo Domingo, were harvesting: a. tobacco b. sugar cane c. rum d. cotton 2. 3 Constructed Response Questions 1. What main ideas did Andre want to convey in his Reflection? 2. When Andre s family offered Maxime, a Haitian who watered the neighborhood lawns, a cool drink of water, why did Maxime look behind his shoulder? What might this story show about the relationship between Dominicans and Haitians? 3. Working in the sugar cane fields for Haitians is described as a form of slavery. Do you agree with this argument? Why or why not?
4 4. What are some of the similarities between the governments of Haiti and the Dominican Republic? What are some of the differences? 5. How does Andre try to combat racism against Haitians in his daily life even though he is no longer living in the Dominican Republic? Why does he think it s important?
5 Essay Prompts Directions: Choose one of the following prompts and write a well-developed response. Circle the prompt you are responding to. Please be sure to use specific details in your essay to develop and support your thinking. 1. Because of the devastating 2010 earthquake in Haiti, this divided island was united for a short time. Do you think that such a relationship could exist in the long-term? Describe in an essay why this unification worked in the short-term, and what do you think would need to happen to make this a lasting and positive relationship between the two countries in the long-term. 2. Illegal immigration is a difficult issue for many countries, including the US. In Andre s Reflection, you learned that Haitian immigrants who are smuggled illegally across the border to work in the Dominican Republic are often underpaid and mistreated even though they help support industries such as sugar cane production and construction. What connections can you make between the illegal immigration that takes place between Haiti and the Dominican Republic and the illegal immigration that takes place between Mexico and the US? In your essay, compare and contrast with specific detail what you see as the similarities and differences between the two examples that make illegal immigration such a difficult issue for governments.
