2 Returning to Portugal This document provides information and details of organisations which may be useful if you are facing removal or deportation to Portugal. If you do not have those documents then you will need to be interviewed by the Portuguese officials in order to obtain an Emergency Travel Document (ETD); if you are in prison or detention this will be facilitated by the Home Office. Any supporting evidence of identity or nationality such as birth certificates etc. will be helpful in securing a travel document. Return If you are willing to return and want to ensure that you are returned to Portugal as soon as possible you can: Contact your caseworker at the Home Office to say that you are willing to return; Make every effort to find supporting documentation for issuing of travel documents; Make contact with the Portuguese Embassy to begin the process of obtaining a travel document. You may find it useful to read the information below to begin preparing for your return. Documentation in Portugal All Portuguese citizens are required to obtain an Identity Card when they turn six years of age. You are not required to carry it with you always but must present it to lawful authorities if requested. The Citizen s Card has replaced previous documentation such as old format Identity Card, taxpayer card, Social Security card, voter s card and National Health Service user s card. The Citizen s Card can be requested at the local identification services (Conservatórias do Registo Civil, Lojas do Cidadão etc) or at consular services abroad. For further information: Tel:

3 Accommodation In Portugal Controlled Cost Housing is provided through the municipalities and housing associations. There are various programmes in Portugal for eligibility and priority to access to social housing, most of which are administered through the municipalities. In the short term, Portugal also has some shelters for the homeless which are listed in the directory below. Health All Portuguese nationals are entitled to access care through the National Health Service of Portugal regardless of any period of absence from the country. Healthcare is provided for as long as the illness lasts, without time limit. To access healthcare you will need to register with your local health centre. While there are fixed-level charges for most health services, many people are exempt from charges particularly if on a low income. The Portuguese government also subsidises prescriptions for between 15-95% of the cost of the medication. For further information contact the Directorate General of Health. Benefits are administered by the Social Security Institution. In order to make a claim, applicants will need to attend their local social security office.
