19 DEPARTURE Fly independently on Friday, May 11 th, arrive Saturday, May 12 th in Amsterdam. Met by AFH staff, and a short train ride to the Hague, where we settle in and explore Sunday, May 13th. Option to fly with Jessie McNevin (exact flight TBA), likely from Charlotte, or arrive separately. A train leaves directly from the Amsterdam airport to The Hague, a small, easy-to-navigate city with much English spoken. Welcome Dinner. Shared rooms in StayOK hostel, all meals included. 19

20 COMING TO JUSTICE, MAY After the war, the Nazi War Criminals had to be punished. The Nuremberg trials were conducted for this purpose, but a more permanent solution was needed. How should people who violate the rights of their own citizens be brought to justice? After WWII, the world created the United Nations and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The International Criminal Court, part of the answer to the difficult question, was created in The Hague. Our program starts by exploring how the Nuremberg trials set the stage for the development of the International Criminal Tribunals. By the time we visit, USC will have established an office 20 there, part of our Rule of Law Collaborative.

21 DEPART FOR AMSTERDAM, MAY 17TH Conclude program module in the Hague and depart for Amsterdam. Settle in at StayOK Vondelpark, a great location. Welcome dinner for Amsterdam. Friday tour and first workshops at the Anne Frank House. Evening visit to Van Gogh Museum, weekend exploring Amsterdam (canal tour, National Museum, farmers/flea market, etc.) 21

22 THE LIFE AND TIMES OF ANNE FRANK Monday, 2 nd half of Workshops on the Life and Times of Anne Frank. How did they survive in hiding so long? Who managed to keep them supplied? What risks did they face? Why were the Nazis so successful in rounding up the Jewish population of the Netherlands, compared to other European countries? 22

23 MEMORY WALKS We are surrounded by monuments what do they mean? What can they teach us? How do we deal with the legacy of the Holocaust and slavery? Have some become outdated? Our final module concerns the politics of memory how we choose to remember and represent history, and the lessons we are supposed to learn from it. In this workshop, run by two top Anne Frank House trainers, we research the history of key monuments, interview locals and visitors about their meaning, and 23 produce a small-team video capturing their diverse perspectives.
