10 Context RedR members often work in dangerous situations where the local populations and people fleeing war and turmoil look to them to provide the basic necessities of life shelter, food, clean water and sanitation.

13 The Register WFP delivers food, but it is also responsible for sophisticated communications for UN agencies on the front-line. Increasingly RedR is asked for people with trade certificates in electrical services, information technology and telecommunications.

21 Working with UN Agencies In the past 2 years RedR Australia members have worked with UN and NGO agencies in most of the world s trouble spots. They have assisted refugees and internally displaced people in Afghanistan, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Jordan, Syria, Iraq, Palestine, Sudan, Chad, Namibia, Malaysia, Cambodia, Myanmar, Sri Lanka, The Maldives, Somalia, Indonesia and Cook Islands. 22 Afghan refugee response In the north-east RedR engineers ran the re-integration programme for over 450,000 refugees who had returned to the four provinces around Jalalabad. Food and hospitality are an important part of Afghan life. Afghan children gather outside a nearly completed new home.

23 Afghan refugee response Travelling out to villages is no easy ride. The craggy outcrops provide shelter for roving militia awaiting an easy target. Children play in the poppy fields. The abolition of the opium trade is a challenge to the new authorities.

24 Afghan refugee response In remote areas of Afghanistan an emergency trip to a health centre could take over seven hours. RedR engineers built bridges and improved roads to allow villagers quicker access to health services for the first time in their lives.

25 RedR in Iraq RedR deployed 8 people into Iraq. Three logisticians worked with WFP to help deliver food to 23 million people. In the month of June 2003, 750,000 tonnes of food was delivered the largest food delivery in history

26 RedR in Iraq In northern Iraq, four RedR members supported UNOPS who provided public and mental health programmes and field co-ordination for displaced people recovering from years of war. Eight people share this room in a camp for internally displaced people

27 RedR in Iraq Immediately after the bombing of the UN HQ, a RedR member flew to Baghdad with WFP to repair the electrical system and keep vitally needed communications operating.

28 RedR in Palestine The restriction of movement around the Occupied Palestinian Territories compelled UNICEF to establish 5 zonal offices in the West Bank and Gaza. Four RedR members worked as Advisors to their Palestinian counterparts maintaining UNICEF s program for children and families in Jenin and Hebron.

29 RedR in Chad/Sudan More than 1.8 million people are displaced in Sudan due to internal conflict. 200,000 fled across the border to Chad. The conditions are harsh and the people have suffered terrible abuse.

30 RedR in Chad/Sudan RedR is working with UNICEF, WFP and UNCHR to provide engineering, transport and logistics support. We are sourcing potable water.

34 RedR Tsunami Response RedR worked with the UN Joint Logistics Centre in Banda Aceh and Medan providing support for air operations.

35 RedR in Aceh, Indonesia With limited resources and much needed assistance from the ADF, RedR logisticians helped WFP receive and distribute 250 mt of food every day for the first 25 days. 350,000 people were fed.

36 RedR working with UNHCR RedR is working with UNHCR to deliver a shelter programme to assist 35,000 families rebuild their homes. This is an enormous challenge with the hope that 1,000 homes will be built within the next 12 months. A programme of resconstruction will also be delivered in the earthquake devastated areas of Nias.

37 RedR Tsunami Response RedR Australia provided 30 personnel to assist in the tsunami response. In Indonesia: Jakarta, Banda Aceh, Medan, Meulaboh and Calang. In Somalia and Sri Lanka. We worked with UN agencies, AusAID, International Red Cross, MSF, Caritas, Care Australia and World Vision.

38 RedR Nias Earthquake Two RedR logisticians deployed immediately to Nias to establish the supply chain for WFP food delivery. Four structural engineers joined AusAID health teams to assess the safety of vital hospitals and infrastructure. Their movement around the island was provided by the Indonesian-based agency, Surf Aid.
