3 Local Immigration Partnership (LIP) Origin and Role Origin Initiated in 2011 through a Federal Service Agreement with Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) Role To lead community based planning intended to facilitate greater supports and services, with an ultimate goal of enhanced outcomes for immigrants In 2012, LIP published a first Community Settlement Strategy with key recommendations to support welcoming communities in Simcoe County This document continues to guide LIP s work
4 Local Immigration Partnership 2017 Public Education Campaign: The Pledge The Pledge Campaign Guided by Settlement Strategy Readiness Theme Develop a Public Education Strategy to reduce racism and encourage cultural competency (p.19) Organizations investing in public education, strategy, and resources
5 2017 Campaign Recap: The Pledge An initiative of the Local Immigration Partnership (LIP) Cultural Competency Working Group Ran from June 1- June 30, 2017 Designed to spark community conversation regarding racism and discrimination Encouraged participants to make public commitments supporting inclusion and diversity Primary vehicle for participation was Campaign Cards inscribed with It Starts with Me (for individuals) or It Starts with Us (for groups) Participation Cards available in English and French Participants encouraged to share commitments by submitting a photo or video (displaying completed cards) via social media platforms: #ITSTARTS Online repository of educational tools provided for public Low cost, high impact
6 2017 The Pledge Social Media Twitter and Facebook Twitter (10,000 followers): June: 171,000 impressions; May: 115,000 impressions; April 70,000 impressions. Reach May 23 July 1: 1,581,885 (reach associated with #ITSTARTS); *1,495,535 specific to County of Simcoe campaign Immigration Website (educational engagement) Average Time on Page: 4:40. 7 2016 Census Data Highlights Fast paced change in parts of Simcoe County 104 Non-official Mother Tongues 61,605 immigrant residents (13.1%) Visible minority population increased 103.8% since 2006 (16,665 to 33,965)
