2 LETTER FROM BOARD CHAIR AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Global Detroit s work has never been more vital. What began in 2010 with one research study that pointed out the economic opportunity for more inclusive immigrant economic development has grown to become a major regional organization dedicated to welcoming international talent, encouraging entrepreneurship, revitalizing neighborhoods, and building a globally competitive and inclusive region. In short, Michigan is a trailblazer in immigrant economic development, thanks in part to the hard work and leadership of Global Detroit s team of innovators and implementers. Beyond the work that Global Detroit directly oversees, we are especially proud of the major initiatives that were originally envisioned in the 2010 study that have become fully functional on their own or that Global Detroit played a role in helping As 2017 begins and the threats to fulfilling our goal to launch. These include the Welcoming Economies Global of mobilizing our immigrant potential are under Network (WE Global), the City of Detroit s Mayor s Office of Immigrant Affairs, Welcome Mat Detroit, Southwest Solutions siege from federal policy changes, Global Detroit has ProsperUS Detroit, the Michigan Immigrant Rights Center s stepped up with the Champions for Growth Campaign. Welcoming Michigan, Global Detroit Cultural Ambassadors, Global Detroit s Opportunity Neighborhoods, Michigan International Talent Solutions, and the Global Talent Retention Initiative of Michigan (GTRI). As 2017 begins and our immigrant potential goals are under siege from federal policy changes, Global Detroit has stepped up with the Champions for Growth Campaign. The Champions for Growth campaign brings together community and business leaders to address potentially devastating shifts in immigration policy. The campaign raises awareness of the positive economic impacts that immigrants make on Metro Detroit. It also builds support for Global Detroit s efforts to develop and implement local policies, practices, infrastructure, and innovative programs that will mobilize Metro Detroit s immigrant potential. We could not have made Metro Detroit a nationally recognized leader in immigrant economic development and made immigrants a critical piece of our region s growth and turnaround plans without your support. 3 2016 ANNUAL REPORT ABOUT GLOBAL DETROIT VISION Global Detroit is building a prosperous, high-growth region known for attracting, retaining, and integrating immigrants into economic development and neighborhood revitalization programs, policies and practices. MISSION To mobilize Metro Detroit s immigrant potential in order to leverage international talent to fill business unmet talent needs and catalyze the growth and development of immigrant entrepreneurs; revitalize neighborhoods; and build a globally competitive and inclusive region. THE CHALLENGE Immigrants have provided enormous value to Metro Detroit s economy and are critical to the region s transition into a knowledge economy, to the revitalization of Detroit neighborhoods, and to contributing to making the region an attractive, diverse, and exciting place to live. Unfortunately, many current private, nonprofit and public sector practices and programs do not actively include immigrants or ignore their talents and contributions. Global Detroit is meeting this challenge by advancing policies and practices that are inclusive of immigrants.

4 2016 ANNUAL REPORT MOBILIZING IMMIGRANT TALENT & ENTREPRENEURSHIP By connecting international talent with regional businesses unmet talent needs, as well as catalyzing the growth and development of immigrant entrepreneurs, Global Detroit is building a global region with competitive advantages in job creation, business growth, and widespread prosperity. The Global Talent Retention Initiative (GTRI) focuses on strengthening and diversifying Michigan s economy through the retention of top international talent. By retaining international students, GTRI is a catalyst to lessening the skills gap, especially in the STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), and cultivating a climate in which Michigan businesses can be competitive in the new economy. young professionals to the marketplace and Detroit s assets. While Detroit has an abundance of small business training and support services, immigrants and some longstanding Detroiters are often left out of these opportunities because of language barriers, limited knowledge of these programs, or misinformation about qualifying criteria. Global Detroit develops partnerships with local entrepreneurship training programs, microlenders, mentors, and more to help promote a strong referral system that connects aspiring and existing business owners who are otherwise left in the dark. With these partners, Global Detroit encourages policy and program changes that are more inclusive of immigrant entrepreneurs. The Cultural Ambassadors program recruits local professionals to volunteer their expertise directly towards connecting immigrants, international students, and More than Salvador Enriquez learned the culinary art of butchery at age nine from a butcher in Guadalajara, long before moving to Detroit in 1999 when he opened his butcher shop. Today, what began as an eight-foot counter and a dream is now Carniceria Guadalajara, a thriving family-owned butcher shop in the Springwells neighborhood of Southwest Detroit that he runs with his daughter Adriana, a graduate of the ProsperUS Detroit small business development program. In July 2016, with some encouragement from Global Detroit staff, Guadalajara was awarded a 2016 Motor City Match grant to use towards expansion, and is a NEIdeas $10k Challenge Finalist. 2,000 international students registered with GTRI

5 2016 ANNUAL REPORT Recruited 29 immigrant and minority entrepreneurs to apply for NEIdeas and Motor City Match for business expansion grants, including six finalists GTRI has been instrumental in helping international students like Arjun Venugopal, a master s degree student at Wayne State University in manufacturing engineering. Before connecting with GTRI, Arjun experienced what most of us would consider a frustrating employment search. I had secured interviews with several companies, Arjun recounts. The day before my interviews they cancelled. I was told they were not looking to hire international students, and they do not do visa sponsorships. It was very disappointing because the hiring manager wanted to give me an interview for the position, [but was not allowed to.] Because of these experiences, Arjun was losing hope. Once he connected with GTRI, Arjun was able to secure a full-time paid internship with Process Control & Instrument (PCI), a system integration and industrial automation engineering firm located in Detroit. He continued to attend GTRI- sponsored workshops on career readiness, OPT/CPT, and tax preparation for international students. While interning at PCI, Arjun was able to secure three years of full-time employment after his graduation utilizing the OPT portion of his student visa at ZF-TRW Automotive in Farmington Hills.

6 2016 ANNUAL REPORT REVITALIZING NEIGHBORHOODS Global Detroit s Opportunity Neighborhoods program is scaling individual empowerment and community development efforts that braid together place-based community organizing, community development, and asset building efforts to foster inclusive and engaged communities where immigrants are welcomed and connected with information, resources, and tools that advance integration and economic opportunities. With Opportunity Neighborhoods programs launched in two Detroit neighborhoods - Southwest and Banglatown - Global Detroit has a vision to deepen work in these neighborhoods and expand to other neighborhoods in the near future. By connecting immigrants and refugees, as well as their African-American neighbors, to asset-building opportunities, neighborhood revitalization efforts, and each other, Global Detroit is helping to build a stronger Detroit in which the contributions that immigrants bring to their new neighborhoods positively impact all community members. Global Detroit s Opportunity Neighborhoods on-the-ground team helps many immigrant families fulfill the American Dream of home ownership. We point people to many of the programs in the city designed to help people buy their first homes, including homeownership training. Global Detroit also has worked closely with aspiring homeowners to help facilitate the purchase of vacant and abandoned homes for the purpose of rehab and occupancy. Since 2014, we have played a part in 38 vacant home purchased through the Detroit Land Bank Authority and the Wayne County Treasurer s Office. In about half of those purchases, Global Detroit has partnered with Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation for home ownership in case management and delivery of other wrap-around client services. Global Detroit spent 2016 exploring, engaging and learning about the Banglatown community, with a vision to deepen our investment in this community in the years to come. Sergio Martinez is one of the new homeowners that Global Detroit assisted and one of the more than 700,000 DREAMers granted relief under President Obama s Deferred Action for Child Arrivals (DACA) program. Sergio arrived in the U.S. at age 3. Sergio has started a block club to improve the neighborhood around his new home and to renovate other vacant homes on his block.

8 2016 ANNUAL REPORT BUILDING A GLOBALLY COMPETITIVE & INCLUSIVE REGION Through groundbreaking research, targeted communication, and advocacy, Global Detroit is building regional infrastructure, inclusive policies, and institutional change to make Metro Detroit a national leader in economic development strategies that position immigrants to spark robust growth and widespread prosperity in our region. Research and Writing Projects Global Detroit leads and participates in a variety of local and national research studies impacting immigrant economic development issues. Communications With websites, newsletters, social media, press conferences and more than 35 speaking engagements and 20 media articles a year, Global Detroit builds public awareness around immigrant economic contributions. Welcoming Economies Global Network (WE Global) The WE Global Network is comprised of more than 20 regional economic development initiatives from across the Rust Belt working to tap into the economic development opportunities created by immigrants. Global Detroit spearheaded the creation of this network, which it runs in partnership with Welcoming America. Making Michigan a welcoming state for immigrants from across the world is a key legislative priority for the Detroit Regional Chamber. The Chamber applauds Global Detroit s important work surrounding this initiative and will continue to support efforts to expand opportunities for immigrants with the needed skills to join our workforce to develop vibrant and sustainable neighborhoods. Sandy K. Baruah, President and CEO, Detroit Regional Chamber Mayor s Office of Immigrant Affairs In September 2015, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan hired a Director of Immigrant Affairs to assist in helping immigrant businesses, making City services language accessible, making Detroit a destination for new refugee residents, implementing a Municipal ID card, and developing programs to better connect Detroit s growing immigrant and ethnic residents to city services and opportunities.

9 2016 ANNUAL REPORT 98% of corporate and community leaders interviewed believe that Global Detroit has been the primary voice (60%) or one of only a few voices (38%) to put the issue of immigrant economic development on the agenda for Metro Detroit. Global Detroit is a critical part of the emerging patriotic effort to bring sanity to our nation s immigration laws and to help grow our economy. As a global leader in the supply chain software business, Llamasoft will always be in a global competition for talent.
