She is the current Floor Manager of the Woolie Ewe Yarn Shop in Plano, Texas. She has previous experience in banking, small business, and Customs Brokerage; a function of the US Treasury Department. She will be talking about our currency, counterfeiters, and the changing face of our money. Her interests include gardening, pets, crime mysteries, handwork and various activities of her grandchildren. Roxane resides in Carrollton with her husband/ and soul mate. Come to the March 26th meeting and find out more about counterfeiting today. 2 President s Message Class 18 is in their third week and starting to have fun. Last week they experienced the PPA and their first taste of wearing bunker gear. They also are beginning their rideouts. Page 2 VOLUME 8, ISSUE 4 Our brick fundraising is ongoing with orders still coming in. This is a remarkable opportunity for you to literally be a part of the new Training Center. I hope you will take advantage of this opportunity. For only $50 your name will be on display in the walkway. April 1 is the RFD deadline for all applications that will be considered for the $1500 scholarship. This scholarship was founded in 2008, with a $500 award. We are proud that we have been able to increase the award over the years. We will soon know the name of our 2013 recipient. Each month we look forward to our speaker at the general meetings. We really need the assistance of our members to offer suggestions on speakers. It s getting harder and harder to come up with ideas, but if we work as a team, we can certainly get some great speakers lined up. Please let any of the board members know what your idea is. Coming up in April, we have the Trash Bash on the 6 th. There are opportunities to help with the trash collection or if you prefer indoors, you will be needed at our CFAAA table. The table is being set up to give us an opportunity to educate our Richardson residents on what the CFAAA is all about. This will take place at the Civic Center. Please contact Alicia Marshall if you want to work the booth or Steve Jennings if you are interested in literally cleaning up our beautiful City. Debbie Conard Volunteer Activities Trash Bash April 6, 2013 While the Richardson City Trash Bash is going on outside on April 6, the Civic Center will be having various vendors and groups showcasing their information inside the Civic Center. If you are not helping outside, please come by the Civic Center and visit with the various city groups and stop and visit the CFAAA table. The table will be manned by Alicia Marshall, Lela Paksoy, and Ray Knodel. It is not too late to purchase a brick paver, and to pick up other city literature while there.

8 Page 8 Mike Baker s Retirement Party On February 27, 2013 firefighter Mike Baker retired from the Richardson Fire Department after 39 years of service to the citizens of Richardson.

10 Page 10 RCFAAA Meeting Feb Recap Chief Dossett introduced our guest, Life Scout Jaime Severlein, working on his Eagle Scout project. He wants to install smoke alarm detectors in low income housing in the neighborhoods near Spring Valley, Beltline, and Floyd. He will have other scouts put up flyers but needs adults to supervise the scouts as they install the smoke alarms. That s where we, the RCFAAA come in. He is targeting the month of April for this project, first with the flyer saturation campaign, then about the 2 nd, 3 rd and 4 th weekends to do the installations. Using a database of houses from the city, he can eliminate the rental houses their landlords are responsible for their own installation of smoke alarms then narrowing down the possible recipients, we find out who wants alarms installed. These alarms are donated by the City of Richardson. Asked about the problem of having a solicitor s license in order to distribute the flyers, Jaime and Chief Dossett said that non-profit organizations do not need a permit and can do so. Other prospective tasks are to check and replace batteries of smoke alarms already installed. The smoke alarms being used have lithium photo electron ionization batteries with a 10 year lifespan. The smoke alarms will not be installed to bring a house up to code, but rather just to have the alarm in the main common areas of each house. To be up to code, would require smoke alarms in every bedroom and there are just not enough to go around for this project. We would most likely have Fire 1 out as well as another engine or truck to go along with us to increase visibility in each neighborhood for the project. The scouts would come in on a bus supplied by the RFD, one that is used for the recruits presently. David Gibbs volunteered to be the RCFAAA liaison for this project. 11 TCFAAA Update The 10th Annual TCFAAA Chiefs Forum was held Saturday March 2nd at the Colleyville library and hosted by the Colleyville CFAAA. Marcia Hurst, Plano PFRA, moderated a panel discussion on changes and challenges facing each Chief in The following Chiefs participated: Colleyville-Chief Clif Nelson, Euless-Chief Wes Rhodes, Farmers Branch- Chief Steve Parker, Frisco- Asst. Chief Lee Glover, Garland- Chief Raymond Knight, Grapevine- Deputy Chief Randy Frisinger, Hurst- Chief John Brown, Irving- Asst. Chief Rusty Wilson, Mansfield- Chief Barry Bondurant, Plano- Asst. Chief David Kerr, Roanoke-Chief Mike Duncan and Richardson Asst. Chief Steve Dossett (out sick). 1st question: What is the biggest challenge facing your department in 2013? All of the Chiefs talked about the mass hiring of Firefighters in the 1980s and how those FFs are now facing eligible retirement and the need for recruiting and training new FFs and Officer development. Many cities have had rapid growth and need additional Fire Stations to cover the needs of the community. Another challenge is the road construction issues in the Metroplex and being able to respond promptly to structure fires and medical calls during this construction. The increase of Assisted Living Centers has increased the EMT calls with a lot of repeat callers putting more demand on the Paramedic Units. 2nd Question: Officer development programs in 2013? This has been an on going challenge for years and getting more important as FFs retire. Training has gotten more expensive and budget limitations during the recession have been a challenge. 3rd Question: What new programs do you have this year? New focus on Rehabbing current personnel and keeping them healthy physically and mentally. Several FDs are using Rapid Response Vehicles like a Chevy Tahoe for routine EMT calls rather than sending an Ambulance or Engine with FFs and Paramedics which is more costly. Wellness groups for public education, combined dispatch of Police, Fire and EMTs, revamped computer-aided dispatch systems, and all digital radio system upgrades are also helping. 4th question: Your best CFAAA programs in 2013? Upgrading Rehab Units with out of service ambulances, adding new mister fans, cooling chairs, and portable RV type Potty with privacy tent. Another priority is training CFAAA members on the new Hands-Only CPR procedures and training people in their communities. Also increasing Scholarships to family members of FFs. Continuing education in the community on when to call 911, and what is an Emergency? Richardson was represented by delegates Rich Hardin, Steve Jennings, Ron Domke and RCFAAA officers Debbie Conrad and Alicia Marshall.
