1 Name: Period: September 11 th Through Different Lenses Instructions: Throughout this year, we will be analyzing events as historians, citizens, geographers, economists, and cultural anthropologists our lenses for the year. This week, we will take a look at the events of September 11, 2001, through these lenses. With your ipad, visit one of the stations around the room and scan the QR code with Qrafter and your ipad camera. (Many ads may pop up just close them by hitting the x. ) Click on Go to URL, or Watch Video for station 2, and this will take you to a site with information about September 11 th. Return to your desk and read the article or watch the video (with headphones), and then answer the questions on this handout in sentences. (To go back to Qrafter when it s time for a new station, hit the Close button on the top right.) Start with stations 1 through 5; if you finish those, keep working on stations 6 through 10. We will have two class periods to work on this. Station 1: Thinking Like an Historian World Trade Center Interactive Timeline At 8:19 that morning, authorities received the first indication that terrorists might be attacking the United States. What happened? Click on Ground Zero Recovery Timeline at the top of the site. Go to October 31, What historical artifacts have been recovered at the World Trade Center site? Station 2: Thinking Like a Citizen President Bush s Speech to the Nation 9/11/01 What were the main points of President Bush s speech to the nation on the night of September 11th? Why do you think it was important for the president to address the nation on that night? Gavin 2014

2 Station 3: Thinking Like a Geographer Map of the 9/11 Flight Paths From what cities did the four flights leave? Where did the each of the flights end? Why do you think the terrorists chose to hijack flights leaving from east coast airports? Why do you think they chose the targets (World Trade Center, Pentagon, White House) they chose? Station 4: Thinking Like an Economist What was the economic impact of September 11? What are some of the reasons it is difficult to quantify the economic impact of the 9/11 attacks? What was the economic impact on New York City? Station 5: Thinking Like a Cultural Anthropologist The Battle for Ground Zero What was the conflict surrounding rebuilding on the site of the World Trade Center Towers? What structures are now situated on the site? Gavin 2014

3 Station 6: Thinking Like an Historian Digital History: September 11, 2001 Read the first four paragraphs about Osama bin Laden. Why was Osama bin Laden angry at the United States? Read the paragraphs under The U.S. Response. What made the war in Afghanistan challenging? How did the international coalition succeed in overthrowing the Taliban government? Station 7: Thinking Like a Citizen National Security vs. Civil Liberty: How do you feel about the Patriot Act? Read the entire Speak Out article entitled National Security vs. Civil Liberty: How do you feel about the Patriot Act? Do you feel safer with this law in effect? How much of your privacy are you willing to sacrifice in order to be safer from the threat of terrorism in the United States?? Station 8: Thinking Like a Geographer The September 11th Attack on the Pentagon Why were so many people able to survive the attack on the Pentagon? Gavin 2014

4 What new information did you learn from looking at these photos and diagrams of the attack site? Station 9: Thinking Like an Economist Costs of War What are at least three ways to think about the economic costs of the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Pakistan? How has the US paid for the wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Pakistan so far? Station 10: Thinking Like a Cultural Anthropologist Attitudes Toward Muslim Americans Post-9/11 Read the paragraph right under the title Attitudes Toward Muslim Americans Post-9/11. How did the attacks of September 11 th affect Muslim Americans? Scroll down to the heading Discussion. What did the researches find out about discrimination toward Muslim Americans that they did not expect? Gavin 2014
