1 Continuing Conflict in SW Asia EQ: What are the causes and effects of key conflicts in SW Asia that required U.S. involvement?

2 Directions Today, we will be looking at the causes of important ongoing conflicts in SW Asia that required United States presence and their outcomes. On page 43 of your INB, you will glue in your foldable. On the LEFT side of your foldable we will be examining the CAUSES of each conflict. On the RIGHT side of your foldable we will look at the OUTCOME of each conflict.

3 1918 ~ Oil: Causes Exports more oil than any other country in the world.

4 1918 ~ oil: outcomes U.S. becomes VERY interested! Gov ts use $ to increase military, power, & conflict with neighbors.

5 1948 : causes Israel created as an independent Jewish state. Growth of Islamism out of anger over creation of Israel.

6 1948 : causes Islamism: the violation of teachings of peace in Islam that leads to extreme violent acts.

7 1948 : outcomes Arabs & Jews fighting today over land & religion. Idea of terrorism increases with extreme Arab groups (Al-Qaeda, Hamas, & ISIS) & gov ts (Taliban)that support the ongoing fight with Israel.

9 1991 ~Persian Gulf war causes Iraq s dictator (Saddam Hussein) invaded Kuwait for oil & access to Persian Gulf. United Nations demanded Iraq leave by cutting off trade to country. Saddam refuses & claims mother of all wars & many Americans will die.
