1 Monday 10:00-13:00 Office Hrs: Monday 14-17, and by appointment ATA 507: HISTORIOGRAPHY FALL 2003 Nadir Özbek Course Description: The seminar introduces students to the range of methodological, theoretical, and ideological frameworks that have guided historians today. It also provides a brief history of historical writing in the twentieth century with a focus on contemporary theoretical and epistemological issues. We will try to map major turning points in the field by examining social history, cultural and linguistic turn, postcolonial theory, postmodernity s histories, and culturalism and globalism as political discourses. In the seminar we aim to explore major differences in assumptions about the meaning and purposes of history. Requirements: Weekly Readings: This seminar is organized around common readings as the basis for weekly discussions. Optional readings are marked by *. Students are to prepare ten short précis (a freewheeling commentary of no more than 2 pages) on some aspect of the week s readings. Attendance and class participation are mandatory and counts 30% of the final grade. Oral Presentations: Each student will serve as discussion leaders for two of the 12 week s reading. It is the discussion leaders task to make extra readings (chosen by the students in consultation with the instructor) and set the stage for the discussion, organize it, guide it during class and offer a summary of the issues and debates that came out in the discussion. In their class presentations students are expected to make references to relevant agendas and discussion in Turkish academia. 15% Term Papers: Each student will write a term paper of 5000 words exploring certain aspect of history writing in Turkey. In the paper, students could either examine the works of a specific Turkish historian or the influence of a methodological/theoretical school on history writing in Turkey. Students could pursue their class-presentation themes as their paper topics. 30% Final Exam: 25 % I INTRODUCTION: II OVERVIEW: HISTORIOGRAPHY IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY: Iggers, Georg G.
