1 Chapter President MSgt (Ret) Terry Turner, and his Executive Council, presents the following summary of accomplishments/activities during the month of March Trustee/First Sergeant Brian Brewer briefed local AFSA activities to the Tinker First Sergeants Council and emphasized the importance of supporting this great organization; international and local. 5. President Terry Turner responded to an AARP alert by contacting US Senators James Inhofe and Tom Coburn (R-OK) by urging them to vote NO on stopping social security cuts. 5. President Terry Turner received response from US Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) regarding Social Security For Seniors. 6. President Terry Turner sent via our list server a call to help Frank Kurland, USN Retired, fight to reserve retainer pay for retirees. He listed Oklahoma Legislators (with supporting documentation) to contact urging their support of fairness when dealing with retirement benefits. 6. The Airman Activities Program furnished 7 volunteers to the Oklahoma City Regional Food Bank. 340 cases were packaged for a total weight of 10,200lbs. The efforts were equivalent to 8,500 meals. 7. Conducted Executive Council Meeting. 7. Donated $ (obtained another $ from Tinker Top 3) to support purchase of trophies for Carl Albert High School, who is hosting an annual drill competition for approx. 8 JROTC high school teams, 4 of whom we support their awards programs. 12. President Terry Turner briefed 30 FTAC attendees resulting in 6 New, 1 Renewal and 3 COAs. They have changed format again, it is vendor style with table and chairs and they come to you. It is done on Wednesdays from and they feed the attendees. 14. Conducted Monthly General Membership Meeting. The March Chapter Legislative Report and prior minutes had been ed to members and were available to attendees as handouts. Door prizes were given. 14. Conducted the Chapter s 1st Quarter General Membership Meeting at the Santa Fe Cattle Co. Steakhouse at 5:00PM. The purpose of a quarterly general membership (GM) meeting is to attract members that are unable to attend our monthly meetings, yet want to engage in/meet other members
3 for possible future involvement. The meeting lasted about an hour and had 21 attendees (our highest attendance yet. Door prizes given; total cost $ ($ For Food and Drinks & $ for Gift Cards volunteers dedicated their time to help build homes for Habitat for Humanity around Oklahoma. 15. President Terry Turner received response from US Rep James Lankford (R-OK5) thanking him for his thoughts on the recent Supreme Court ruling on the Patient Protection Protection and Affordable Care Act. He advised he s always maintained a staunch opposition to any form of federally mandated state exchange system. 15. Webmaster Lisa Muth received response from US Rep. Chuck Fleishchmann (R-TN3) stating that despite the House of Representatives voting two separate times to replace sequestration with more responsible cuts, President Obama declined to address our legislation or even propose an alternative. 15. President Terry Turner represented chapter at the Tinker Top 3 monthly meeting. 15. President Terry Turner represented chapter at the Chief Induction ceremony held at Tinker Club from Volunteers assisted with selling T-shirts and Jell-O shots to raise $1300 for the upcoming Aids Walk scheduled for September. 16. Trustee Don Sullivan contact US Senators James Inhofe and Tom Coburn (R-OK) via Capwiz urging support of Amendment #72 co-introduced by Senator Inhofe that would stop the termination of Tuition Assistance for the Armed Forces. It s a part of the Continuing Resolution to keep the federal government running for the remainder of the fiscal year. 18. Airman Activities Program assisted veterans with refreshments and playing Bingo by sending 32 volunteers for their monthly Bingo night at the VA Home. 19. Trustee/First Sergeant Brian Brewer briefed local AFSA activities to the Tinker First Sergeants Council and emphasized the importance of supporting this great organization; international and local. 21. The chapter funded and Tinker First Sergeants served pizza, chips and soda/water for a light lunch meet and greet to afford ALS students an opportunity to meet and interact with the First Sergeants; event cost $ President Terry Turner, VP Michael Mooney and Trustees Brian Brewer briefed the importance of AFSA's role in promoting and protecting earned benefits of the Air Force total enlisted force and their families, the resulting legislative process, and local chapter activities later in the date to 33 attendees; recruited 22 New Members 22. President Terry Turner received response from US Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK) on sequestration and its inefficient application to our nation s financial problems. 22. Trustee Doug Bynum received legislative updates on a variety of topics from US Representative Tom
4 Cole (R-OK4). 25. Trustee Don Sullivan received response from US Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK4) advising he does and will support the Retiree Restoration Pay Act (Concurrent Receipt). 26. Chaplain Jeremy Heinz attended the Annual Christian Business Men s Connection (CBMC) Prayer Breakfast at the OKC Cox Convention Center with approx attendees. Some notable attendees were Congressman James Lankford, Lt. Governor Todd Lamb and Mayor Mick Cornett. 26. Trustee/First Sergeant Brian Brewer briefed local AFSA activities to the Tinker First Sergeants Council and emphasized the importance of supporting this great organization; international and local. 26. Webmaster Lisa Muth received response from US Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN) about sequestration. He voted for Continuing Resolution (CR) which funds the government the rest of the year and includes but mitigates the impact of the cuts of some programs. 27. President Terry Turner received response from US Rep (R-OK5) James Lankford reference federal budget. 27. President Terry Turner planned another popular Membership Appreciation event focused on rewarding members for all their volunteer efforts. 85 Members and family enjoyed a night out to watch the Oklahoma City Thunder NBA team play the Washington Wizards; cost $ It was also Military Appreciation Night, which accounted for an additional 500 military members attending.
5 28. President Terry Turner represented the chapter at ALS Graduation. Chapter 985 is the sole sponsor of the Tinker AFB Airman Leadership School John Levitow Award volunteers represented AFSA while participating as judges for a drill meet at Carl Albert High School JROTC flights. 31. President Terry Turner distributed 6 Straight from the CEO messages, 2 Chapter Executive Council Minutes, 2 Chapter General Membership Meeting Minutes, 2 AFSA Team Tinker Monthly Newsletter, 2 Chapter Monthly Legislative Reports, 2 Reminders of Monthly and Quarterly General Membership Meetings, 1 CMSAF message on discontinuing military Tuition Assistance, 1 CAPWIZ link to contact elected officials to restore Tuition Assistance, 1 Oklahoma Veterans Bulletin and 2 Membership Appreciation Night Announcements via our Web Site List server to over 3,841 subscribers. He additionally disseminated volumes of information to the chapter Executive council. 31. Airman Activities Program distributed 6 notices via our list server to over 3,841 subscribers offering volunteer opportunities for the Military Welcome Center (2), VA Bingo Night Event (32), Aids Walk Fundraiser (3), Habitat for Humanity (14), Regional Food Bank (6), Carl Albert Drill Meet (5). 62 Volunteers for March, 208 Total Hours of Community Service 2 Volunteers for the Military Welcome Center 32 Volunteers for the VA Bingo Night 3 Aids Walk Fundraiser 14 Volunteers for Habitat for Humanity 6 Volunteers for Regional Food Bank 5 Volunteers for Carl Albert Drill Meet New events April Special Olympics Softball Tournement-10 Apr OKC Marathon 28 Apr VA Bingo 15 Apr Military Welcome Center Every Weekend Heart Walk Apr EOI Testing-Midwest City HS-16 Apr- 9 May 31. VP Michael Mooney reported a membership summary for March 2013 as follow: 25 new members recruited resulting in a total of 53 new members recruited year-to-date from 3 different recruiters; and a total strength of 1,693 total members (1,604 active and 89 lapsed). 4 members retained this month, 16 YTD from 4 retainers. 85 of 89 members on the lapsed roster contacted via for a 96% contact rate.
6 Trustee Doug Bynum contacted 25 of 88 members by every means necessary. None updated, 88 members still remain. Year-to-date: No Skyhighers and no Highfliers thus far. 31. March Legislative Letter Writing Summary via CAPWIZ: 6 Members (Turner, Bynum, Ossinger, Muth, Heinz & Sullivan) wrote 45 letters and received 10 responses: 6 letters to U,S. President, no response 6 letters to U.S. VP, no response 6 letters to Secy of Defense, no response 18 letters to U.S. Senators with 6 responses 9 letters to U.S. Representatives with 4 responses 31. We had 210 unique visitors and a total of 3,841 list server subscribers to our web site in March. Total unique visitors for 2013 YTD are 582. Thanks to all the members and their families who attended our Membership Appreciation Night at the Thunder dome in OKC, once again it was a great event. Members attended free event sponsored by Chapter 985. After half-time, during groups in attendance our name was displayed proudly. Over 500 military members attended, the team sponsored it's 5th Military Appreciation Night. This month was a testimonial to what a professional organization does to make your life better. The Air Force suspended Tuition Assistance due to budget cuts and the amount spent thus far on supporting "A"irman going to school. As you know due to the efforts of your organization of choice, Tution assistance will be reinstated later in Apr or May time frame, what an achievement. AFSA members submitted over 15K letters to elected officials and werew driving force in making this change occur. Great job AFSA & Chapter 985! Our Chapter Delegates will go fourth next month to the annual Division 3 (Formerly 89) Professional Airmen Conference in Council Bluff, Iowa. We have five individual nominated for individual excellence and the chapter is nominated for five team excellence awards. We wish the a safe and fun trip and hopefully they bring home the gold!
