1 III Congress of the Latin American Society of Risk Analysis São Paulo, Brazil, from May 10 to 13, 2016 Development and Risks in the Latin American Context Desenvolvimento e Riscos no Contexto Latino Americano 1 ORGANIZERS OF THE EVENT Latin America Society for Risk Analysis ABGE Brazilian Association for Engineering Geology and Environmental 2 ORGANIZERS PROFILE THE SOCIETY FOR RISK ANALYSIS ( is a multi-disciplinary, interdisciplinary and academic international society which provides an open forum for those interested in the subject risk analysis and defines widely aspects from characterization, communication, assessment and management, to the proposal of public policies in the context of risks and threats which could affect individuals, public and private organizations and the society in general. The SRA has regional organizations and groups of specialties around the world that make possible the interaction between close members to the locality who are related to similar disciplines. Founded in 1980 in the United States of America it has grown significantly since the foundation. The society has carried out meetings annually and published the scientific magazine Risk analysis: an international journal since 1981 and is considered to be the leader in the field of risk analysis. The society has more than 2000 members of universities, governments, industry, and nongovernmental organizations. The LATIN AMERICAN REGIONAL GROUP, named Latin American Society of Risk Analysis ( was created in Jun 6th 2008 during the II SRA World Congress in Guadalajara, México, with a government s structure through an Executive Council. The has the participation of several Latin American countries: Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Jamaica, México, Trinidad and Tobago, Venezuela, among others and it has successfully celebrated two congresses, the first was held in 2010 at Universidad Diego Portales at Santiago, Chile, and the second at Universidad de Los Andes at Bogotá, Colombia, in / 6

2 The Brazilian Association for Engineering Geology and Environmental (ABGE) is a scientific and technical non-profit entity founded in 1968 which works to join professionals that perform Engineering and Environmental Geologies branches, stimulating the debate and the reflection in themes that implicate the foresight of the geological behavior and doing the requests of the works of engineering and infrastructure. The entity is one of the most active associations of the IAEG (International Association of Geological and Environmental Engineering). The ABGE's principal focus of action is the promotion and diffusion of the knowledge throughout the realization of events such as symposiums, congresses, workshops, technical meetings, round tables, lectures, as well as the edition of books, manuals, annals of congresses and magazines, and promotion of various training courses. The ABGE by using his Risks and Natural Disasters Brazilian committee CBRDN, together with the accomplished the III Latin American Congress of the Society of Hazard Analysis. 3 OBJECTIVES OF THE CONGRESS The main objective of the congress is the interchange of experiences between specialists of various disciplines related with analysis and the risk management. The general objective of the congress Development and risk in the Latin American contexts is to emphasize the role of the hazard analysis like tool of support in the decision-making to communicate technical and political objectives, paying attention and preventing disasters in its various forms, implicating the public and private sectors in the context of Latin America countries that have as principal characteristic the limitation of resources and an accentuated social inequality. In this way the III Congress 2016 attempts: Stimulating the dialogue and the interchange of experiences on risks among the investigators, professionals, students, members of industries and of private and governmental Latin American institutions. Propitiating an environment for the discussion about methods of analysis, processes and criteria for the decision-making methods used at the different Latin American countries related with prevention, vulnerability and territorial planning. Divulging the recent advances in characterization, evaluation, handling and communication of risks. 2 / 6

3 Divulging cases, methods and processes of answer to emergency. Stimulating the linkage between organizations and individuals of Latin America in order to spread out good practices in risk management. 4 ATTENDANCE The invites specialists, investigators, students, public or private institutions' professionals, and applicants in prevention, evaluation, education, mitigation, communication and risk management. 5 FORMAT OF THE CONGRESS The 2016th Regional Congress will be the third of the Latin American congresses organized by the and pre-congress will be composed by courses, roundtables, lectures and symposiums as well as presentation of oral works and posters. All works will be examined by a Scientific Committee of the 's specialist members. There will be sessions of discussion, where it will be possible to present several oral simultaneous works at a same similar way to the Greek model of public expression, utilizing multimedia and optimization resources of the spaces. 6 CONGRESSIONAL PLACE IPT Institute of Technology Research Auditorium of Building 39 Av. Risks and effects on the human health: exposure assessment, dose response evaluation, microbial risk analysis, occupational health and safety. 3 / 6

4 Technological risks related with hazardous materials qualitative and quantitative risk assessment, management programs and attention to chemical emergencies. Risks for the environment: ecological risk assessment, contaminated areas, impacts, threats for the environment, management of natural resources. Risks and development: land use planning, public policies, geopolitics, government, engineering and infrastructure. Risk Communication: Perception, complexities of the risk communication, education, participation and culture. Other themes: information technology, economics and benefits analysis, emerging nanoscale materials, security and defense, terrorism, among others. 10 WORKSHOPS Dr. Mabel Padlog, México: Qualitative methods as a tool in social research in risk studies (this course will be given in Spanish).
