Voters also retained judges and voted on three statewide ballot initiatives. The following document contains the official statewide election results from 2011, the 2012 Primary, and the 2012 General Election. It also contains other important information, including voter turnout statistics and a directory of state and county elected officials. 5 About the Format of this Abstract Results Contained in the Abstract This publication contains the official certified results for the 2011 Odd-Year, 2012 Primary, and 2012 General Elections for all candidates, ballot issues, and ballot questions. Results & Officer Information Reported by the Counties The election results in this abstract were obtained from each of Colorado's 64 counties. These results are more accurate than the compiled and totaled returns reported on the Secretary of State's website immediately after the election because they account for any miscalculations in the totals initially reported by each county. Judicial Officer Information Judicial officer information, including dates of oath and terms of office, was provided by the Office of the State Court Administrator. Total Registered Voters, Total Ballots Cast, & Turnout The number of registered voters eligible to vote in each contest is reported in the column titled Registered Voters. The column titled Ballots Cast reflects the number of voters who actually voted in a particular contest, as reported by each county. The column titled Turnout % reflects the percentage of registered voters who cast a ballot in each contest. Sample Statewide Results For every statewide contest, such as President, the results are reported by each of the 64 counties listed in alphabetical order, with a statewide total at the bottom. Candidates are listed in the order they appeared on the ballot. For example: County Registered Voters Ballots Cast Virgil H. Goode Jr. / Jim Clymer (ACN) Barack Obama / Joe Biden Mitt Romney / Paul Ryan Gary Johnson / James P. Gray (LIB) Adams 258, , ,649 70,972 2,413 Alamosa 10,013 6, ,811 2, Arapahoe 384, , , ,588 3,552 Legislative & Congressional District Results Legislative and congressional district results include each county comprising the legislative or congressional district in alphabetical order, with a district total at the bottom. 6 A Note on Calculating Voter Turnout Because of a recent change in Colorado law, this abstract marks a change in the method used to calculate voter turnout. Previously, turnout percentage had been calculated based on the total number of active registered voters rather than the total number of registered voters which includes both active and inactive voters. In 2012, the General Assembly amended the law to require that turnout be calculated as a percentage of all registered voters. This abstract reflects the new law. Calculating turnout as a percentage of all registered voters more accurately represents true turnout, because it accounts for inactive voters. Inactive voters are eligible to vote and every election includes inactive voters who do cast their ballots. But because all registered voters are now included in the calculation, a comparison of voter turnout from the 2012 General and Primary Elections with turnout from previous years elections could lead to the incorrect conclusion that voter turnout decreased significantly in To avoid confusion, we have included additional tables in the turnout section at the end of this abstract showing the turnout calculation using both methods the old and the new. The following is an example of the differences you will see when comparing the two calculation methods: 2012 General Election Turnout (calculated as a percentage of active voters) County Active Voters Ballots Cast Turnout % Adams 189, , % Alamosa 7,152 6, % Arapahoe 310, , % Archuleta 7,195 6, % 2012 General Election Turnout (calculated as a percentage of registered voters) County Registered Voters Ballots Cast Adams Alamosa 258,272 10, ,945 6,837 Arapahoe 384, ,033 Archuleta 10,179 6,805 Turnout % 68.90% 68.28% 74.91% 66.85% 3
