This book will present a synthesis of the extensive academic literature on various aspects of partisan polarization in contemporary American politics as well as some original data analysis in a way that will be accessible to undergraduate and beginning graduate students. The Shrinking Middle in American Politics A series of papers culminating in a book (with Richard Fleisher) analyzing party polarization and the rise and disappearance of moderates in the U.S. Congress from the 1870s to the present. Presidential-Congressional Relations A series of articles up-dating and building upon previous research on the conditions that explain presidential success and failure in Congress. Congressional Elections A series of papers and articles analyzing problems of representation and democratic linkage in congressional elections. The papers focus on the effects of partisanship, district characteristics and candidate behavior (i.e., voting records, constituency service) on congressional elections.
