3 US police fatalities up 13 percent in 211 to 173 Craig Floyd, chairman of National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund, blamed the rise on budget cuts to public safety departments. "I'm very troubled that these drastic budget cuts have put our officers at grave risks," he said. "Our officers are facing a more brazen cold-blooded element and fighting a war on terror, and street criminals, and we're giving them less training and less equipment they need to do their jobs safely." The police deaths were spread across 41 states and Puerto Rico. 4 On behalf of the Georgia Law Enforcement Community, the GBI FOP Lodge 13 would like to thank you for your support during the 211 Legislative session. We, the Agents of the GBI, have hope that you will continue to work this session to help us. During the 28 Legislative session, the salary adjustment was passed and put into the budget for the GBI. After years of no adjustment, the morale of the Agency was raised to a new high. The mass exodus of qualified, experienced Special Agents stopped. Unfortunately, this was short lived as dramatic demands were made to State Agencies to make major cuts to budgets with no regard to the different roles of the different State Agencies to the public. The salary adjustment that was approved and placed in the GBI budget by the 28 Legislative session was cut under strict orders from the Perdue administration. You do not need to guess what has now happened to morale and the exodus of your GBI Special Agents. Investigative Division employees: Since 28, 28 Special Agents, over 1 years experience, have left the GBI for higher salary equating a loss of $1,68,. in training expenses. As of January, 211 GBI Investigative Division Number of GBI Agents: = 85 fewer Agents to fight crime in 159 counties in Georgia The GBI Special Agents have been working more cases with fewer Agents and less salary. (The state health insurance rates have increased each year, even if there is no cost of living salary increase.) We are losing qualified, experienced Agents due to the salary cuts. The citizens of the State of Georgia will ultimately suffer. We need your help and support to restore the salary cuts and make the salary parity a permanent part of the GBI budget.

6 The GBI Investigative Division has 29 offices. The offices normally have a supervisor and an assistant supervisor to keep up with the workload of the Agency. Since the salary budget cuts, 9 of the offices have had a forced reduction to one supervisor, which slows the productivity of the office and puts more workload on Special Agents who should be working cases rather than handling administrative responsibilities. The GBI has a long history of working behind the scenes, without credit or recognition of the dedicated work of the GBI Agents. We allow the agency that requested assistance to be in the spotlight in most cases. The Police Chiefs and Sheriffs usually conduct the press conferences with little mention of the GBI.
