President sreport Thereweremorethan44,000 applications,makingtulane s applicationpooloneofthehighestin theunitedstates. Enrollmentexceededexpectations: 1,600studentswereexpected,while
3 1,633wereactuallyenrolled.Despite thehigherthanexpectedenrollment, housingandadequatesectionswere arrangedforall1,633students. Thenewlyenrolledclassistiedforthe Tulaneall timehighinsatscoresand studentsrankinginthetop10%of theirgraduatingclasses.sixty two percentarewomen;withenrollees beingfromabroadgeographic distribution.chosenmajorswere evenlydistributedacrosstheschools. PresidentCowennotedthatforthefall of2011,thetargetsizeofthe matriculatingclasswillbereduced from1,600to1,400toavoiddiluting theexperienceofthestudents,andto ensureanevenhigherstandardof quality. Itwasreportedthatstudentretention increasedagain.theretentionrate increasedfrom90.7%lastyearto 91.6%thisyear.Thismeans graduationrateswillincrease. Aquestionwasaskedregardingwhat hascontributedtoretention. PresidentCowennotedthatmore timeoncampusandthecommunity engagementcomponenthavebeen centraltoincreasingstudent retention. Enrollmentinalloftheprofessional andgraduateschoolscontinuestobe strong.medicineisatanalltimehigh, andthephdprogramsareincreasing insize.theonlyschoolsmallerthan previouswastheschooloflaw(by choice). Aquestionwasraisedregardingthe sizeofthephdprogramspre and post Katrina.Wehaveatargetof800 doctoralcandidates. Inbroadstrokes,theSciencesand HealthSciencesremainsteadyin comparisontopre Katrinanumbers, whiletheliberalartsprogramsstill remaindecreasedduetoclosed programs Aquestionwasaskedregardingfree applicationsandwhetherthishelps withtheapplicationnumbersornot. PresidentCowennotedthatthiswas unlikelytohaveasignificanteffect; the44,000applicationsareuniqueto Tulane,independentfromthe CommonApplication. Thegoalistoraiseatleast$65 millionintotalprivatesupport thisyear,including12million inunrestrictedfunds.$60 millionwasraisedlastyear. Increasethetotalnumberof Universitydonorstogreater than17, Preparetolaunchacampaign fortulaneempowers,which willembodyallofour communityactivitiesforthe wholeuniversity.therewillbe ahardlaunchinthenext90 dayswithagoalof$100 millioninfundraising 3. AcampaignforAthleticsis forthcomingthoughtthe detailsarestillbeingdiscussed atthistime. 4. PresidentCowenaddressed rumorsregardinganew footballstadium.the Universityhascometothe conclusionthatthesuperdome isnotaviableoptionforthe long term.wearelookingat possibilitieson campusand off campus.hopefully,a decisionwillbemadebythe endofthefiscalyear.president Cowennotedthatthe Universitywouldonlybuilda newstadiumifexternalfunds areusedtodoso. 5.
