MartinDavies,onbehalfofthe ExecutiveSenate,nominatedHugh LongandCatherineHancocktothe President sfacultyadvisory Committee.Bothwereelectedbythe Senate. President sreport Thereweremorethan44,000 applications,makingtulane s applicationpooloneofthehighestin theunitedstates. Enrollmentexceededexpectations: 1,600studentswereexpected,while
3 1,633wereactuallyenrolled.Despite thehigherthanexpectedenrollment, housingandadequatesectionswere arrangedforall1,633students. Thenewlyenrolledclassistiedforthe Tulaneall timehighinsatscoresand studentsrankinginthetop10%of theirgraduatingclasses.sixty two percentarewomen;withenrollees beingfromabroadgeographic distribution.chosenmajorswere evenlydistributedacrosstheschools. PresidentCowennotedthatforthefall of2011,thetargetsizeofthe matriculatingclasswillbereduced from1,600to1,400toavoiddiluting theexperienceofthestudents,andto ensureanevenhigherstandardof quality. Itwasreportedthatstudentretention increasedagain.theretentionrate increasedfrom90.7%lastyearto 91.6%thisyear.Thismeans graduationrateswillincrease. Aquestionwasaskedregardingwhat hascontributedtoretention. PresidentCowennotedthatmore timeoncampusandthecommunity engagementcomponenthavebeen centraltoincreasingstudent retention. Enrollmentinalloftheprofessional andgraduateschoolscontinuestobe strong.medicineisatanalltimehigh, andthephdprogramsareincreasing insize.theonlyschoolsmallerthan previouswastheschooloflaw(by choice). Aquestionwasraisedregardingthe sizeofthephdprogramspre and post Katrina.Wehaveatargetof800 doctoralcandidates. Inbroadstrokes,theSciencesand HealthSciencesremainsteadyin comparisontopre Katrinanumbers, whiletheliberalartsprogramsstill remaindecreasedduetoclosed programs Aquestionwasaskedregardingfree applicationsandwhetherthishelps withtheapplicationnumbersornot. PresidentCowennotedthatthiswas unlikelytohaveasignificanteffect; the44,000applicationsareuniqueto Tulane,independentfromthe CommonApplication. PresidentCowenreviewedthefour primaryprioritiesinacademics. 1. SuccessfullycompletetheSACS review.thesacssitevisitis scheduledforthespringof Solidifyandenhancethe platformforthemedicalschool 3. ImplementPhaseIIIofthe doctoralprogramgrowth strategy.increasethenumber ofstudentsindoctoral educationto850by ReviseProject2020.This projectwilldoubletheamount ofresearchfundingto$300 milliondollars.aswecloseout 2010,weareatanalltimehigh

SearchforanewDeanofthe A.B.FreemanSchoolof Business.ProfessorDenisiwill besteppingdownattheendof theyear.thissearchisongoing 2. EstablishtheEndowedSacks ChairinSocialInnovation.The provost sofficewillbeleading thissearch. 3. Appointfivefunded professorshipsinsocial Innovation.These professorshipswillrun throughtheprovost soffice. 4. PresidentCowennotedthatthe hiringfreezeisover,andasof Sept1 st.,wearenowwearein aperiodstabilization, 5. Continuetobuildthe UniversityRelations/ Developmentand Administrativeservices Functions.Therewillbetwo milliondollarsayear commitmentforuniversity Relations.AnneBanjoswillbe leadingtheinitiativeregarding AdministrativeServices 6. Monitorandadjustfacultyand staffcompensationlevels.we havebeenthroughtworounds ofreview;theprovost soffice willcontinuetostudythis. Wheretherearepockets,they willbeaddressed. Bucket3:Development 1. Thegoalistoraiseatleast$65 millionintotalprivatesupport thisyear,including12million inunrestrictedfunds.$60 millionwasraisedlastyear. Increasethetotalnumberof Universitydonorstogreater than17, Preparetolaunchacampaign fortulaneempowers,which willembodyallofour communityactivitiesforthe wholeuniversity.therewillbe ahardlaunchinthenext90 dayswithagoalof$100 millioninfundraising 3. AcampaignforAthleticsis forthcomingthoughtthe detailsarestillbeingdiscussed atthistime. 4. PresidentCowenaddressed rumorsregardinganew footballstadium.the Universityhascometothe conclusionthatthesuperdome isnotaviableoptionforthe long term.wearelookingat possibilitieson campusand off campus.hopefully,a decisionwillbemadebythe endofthefiscalyear.president Cowennotedthatthe Universitywouldonlybuilda newstadiumifexternalfunds areusedtodoso. 5. Finally,itwasnotedthatallof thisistoprepareforamajor campaign(1billion)withinthe nexttwotofiveyears. Bucket4:CapitalProjects 1. Thegoalistocomplete constructionoftheresidential HallIIintimeforthefallof Completethedesignforthe newbasketball/volleyball facility,andbeginconstruction nolaterthanjanuaryof TheUniversityiscurrently lookingatoptionsfor constructionofanew ResidentialCollegeIII. 5. CompletetheJBJlabspace renovation($16millionin renovations).thenih funded infrastructurerenovationsare happeningnow($10million). ThegoalistoobtainNIH approvaltoenablefurther constructionbiddingnolater thanjuneof Completeconstructionofthe ResearchBuildingatthe PrimateCenter 7. PresidentCownnotedthatall together,thereisabout$85 millioninbuildingrightnow. PresidentCowennotedthatKatrina stillhasaneffectonouru.s.news& WorldReportrankings.Becausethe graduationrates/retentionrates persistforuptosixyears,the rankings/metricswithoutkatrina wouldhavetakenusto38from42. TheKatrinaeffectwilllikelyremain withtulaneuniversityforthenext twoyears. PresidentCowennotedthatthe seasonforhonorarydegree nominationsisuponus,andif Senatorshavenominations,they shouldbedirectedtobenmcnamara (SchoolofMedicine),AnneBanjos,or MartinDavis. United shealth insurancepremiums willincreaseby10%foremployees earninglessthan$65,000andby 13.5%forthoseearning$65,000or more.thiswasduetoexceptionally largeclaimslastyear.theuniversity paysapproximatelyhalfoftheactual premiumandisabsorbing approximatelyhalfoftheincrease (andalargerfractionofthelowerincomebracket). Themotionfurtherrequesteda reductionof2to1senatorsforthe SchoolofContinuingStudies,effective attheendofthisacademicyear. SenatorLongraisedaprocedural questionregardinghowtobringan amendmenttopartiiiofthefaculty Handbook.HenotedthattheSchoolof PublicHealthanticipatesbringing somesubstantiveissuestoftfr regardingfacultyappointments.the questionwaswithrespecttowhether thisshouldgotoftfrdirectly,or shoulditgotosenatefirst.the answerwasthateitherisappropriate bytheconstitution.
