6 INTRODUCTION The Trusteeship Council is assigned under the Charter of the United Nations to supelvise the administration of Trust Territories which are placed under the International Trusteeship System. The Council meets annually and holds special sessions when required. The Index to Proceedings ofthe Trusteeship Council is a guide to the documentation and proceedings of the Trusteeship Council. This issue covers the fifty-eighth regular session as well as the twenty-first special session. The twenty-first special session of the Trusteeship Council was held at the request of the, in order to consider the dispatch of a visiting mission to observe the current conditions in Palau, Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. The Index is prepared by the Dag Hammarskj61d Library as one of the products of the United Nations Bibliographic Information System (UNBIS). Index to spe«hes, providing access to speeches that were made before the Trusteeship Council. The index is subdivided into three sections: corporate names/countries, speakers and subjects; List of documents, listing documents arranged by symbol. DOCUMENTATION OF THE TRUSTEESHIP COUNCIL Meeting records of the Council are issued as verbatim records in provisional form only with corrigenda provided as appropriate to cover substantive corrections submitted by delegations. They may be identified by their symbol (TIPV.-), followed by an ordinal number corresponding to that of the meeting (e.g., TIPV.1685). ARRANGEMENT OF THE INDEX HOW TO OBTAIN DOCUMENTS TIle Index to each session is arranged as follows: Sessional information, listing officers and providing information on the rules of procedure and on the republication of the resolutions and decisions; Check-list of meetings, listing the meetings for the session and the dates they were held; Agenda, listing items considered by and brought before the Council together with the SUbject headings under which these items are listed in the subject index; Subject index, providing topical access to Trusteeship Council documentation arranged alphabetically by agenda subjects and listing documents submitted under each agenda item, meetings at which the items were considered and the action taken on each item; Printed documentation of the sessions of the Trusteeship Council may be obtained orpurchased from authorized sales agents by providing the following information: Official Records ofthe Trusteeship Counci~ Fifty-eighth session: Meeting... 12 SESSIONAL INFORMATION The fifty-eighth session of the Trusteeship Council was held at United Nations Hearguarters in New York. The session was declared open on Friday, 3 May 1991 by the Temporary President, Thomas Richardson.
