1 - DISTRICT 6110 JULY 2013 Page 1 District 6110 Governor s Newsletter MAY 2015 MAGAZINE MONTH Governor Herb Orr May is the month for us to reflect back upon our history in Rotary and think about what we have accomplished in the world. Can you imagine where we would be today in our service to mankind if women had been part of that initial group within Rotary in Many Rotarians now believe the pivotal point in Rotary history was the 1989 Council on Legislation vote to admit women into Rotary. By the year 1990 there were over 20,000 new female Rotarians, and by 2010, there where over 200,000 worldwide. President Gary C.K. Huang expressed the importance of family in Rotary. He said I want to make not family of Rotary, but our own Rotary families, a priority in our membership. He also encourages spouses of Rotarians to join in the fun. Carol joined the Rotary Club of Tulsa Sunrise 1999, after 5 years of being involved through of my commitment to Rotary. I only encouraged her to join. It was because others saw in her those characteristics that would make her a great Rotarian and so they asked her to become part of the premier service group. Most of my long time Rotary friends today believe the best thing we ever did to build Rotary numbers was to allow women to join. What we found is that it also has enhanced what we do in our communities and our world. We have exponentially improved the way we are doing business. Through our travels in our district we observed many great Rotarians and a good many of those are females. The female graduates from the 6110 Leadership Academy show that there is high number interested in becoming more than just a Rotarian. From the pool of graduates we will have a number of women that will become District Governors in the next few years. As you introduce more women to Rotary, your club is more appealing and much more productive. Our unofficial five way test ends with the word FUN and if you are doing good in your world you will have fun. Thank you to the women of Rotary for your service. GOD Bless!

2 Rotary District 6110 Newsletter MAY, 2015 Page 2 TIMELINE OF WOMEN IN ROTARY An enactment to delete the word male from the Standard Rotary Club Constitution is proposed by a Rotary club in India for the Council on Legislation meeting at the 1950 RI Convention. Elizabeth 1964 The S. Council Demaray on begins Legislation her term agenda as treasurer, contains an the enactment first woman proposed to serve by in a Rotary this position. club in Ceylon (now Sri Lanka) to permit the admission of women into Rotary clubs. Delegates vote that it be withdrawn. Two other proposals to allow women to be eligible for honorary membership are also withdrawn As more women begin reaching higher positions in their professions, more clubs begin lobbying for female Anne members. L. Matthews A U.S. Rotary begins club her term proposes as the admitting first woman women to serve into Rotary as RI vice at the president Council on Legislation Three separate proposals to admit women into membership are submitted to the Council on Legislation for consideration at the 1977 RI Convention. A Brazilian club makes a different proposal to admit women as honorary members The Rotary Club of Duarte, California, USA, admits women as members in violation of the RI Constitution and Standard Rotary Club Constitution. Because of this violation, the club's membership in Rotary International is terminated in March (The club was reinstated in September 1986.) 1980 The RI Board of Directors and Rotary clubs in India, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United States propose an enactment to remove from the RI and club constitutions and bylaws all references to members as male persons In a lawsuit filed by the Duarte club, the California Superior Court in 1983 rules in favor of Rotary International, upholding gender-based qualification for membership in California Rotary clubs. In 1986, the California Court of Appeals reverses the lower court's decision, preventing the enforcement of the provision in California. The California Supreme Court refuses to hear the case, and it is appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court On 4 May, the U.S. Supreme Court rules that Rotary clubs may not exclude women from membership on the basis of gender. Rotary issues a policy statement that any Rotary club in the United States can admit qualified women into membership The Rotary Club of Marin Sunrise, California (formerly Larkspur Landing), is chartered on 28 May. It becomes the first club after the U.S. Supreme Court ruling to have women as charter members Sylvia Whitlock, of the Rotary Club of Duarte, California, becomes the first female Rotary club president In November, the RI Board of Directors issues a policy statement recognizing the right of Rotary clubs in Canada to admit female members based on a Canadian law similar to that upheld by the U.S. Supreme Court At its first meeting after the 1987 U.S. Supreme Court decision, the Council on Legislation votes to eliminate the requirement in the RI Constitution that membership in Rotary clubs be limited to men. Women are welcomed into Rotary clubs around the world As of June, there are about 20,200 female Rotarians worldwide. The Rotarian runs a feature on women in Rotary In July, eight women become district governors, the first elected to this role: Mimi Altman, Gilda Chirafisi, Janet W. Holland, Reba F. Lovrien, Virginia B. Nordby, Donna J. Rapp, Anne Robertson, and Olive P. Scott Carolyn E. Jones begins her term as the first woman appointed as trustee of The Rotary Foundation Catherine Noyer-Riveau begins her term as the first woman elected to the RI Board of Directors More than 199,000 women are members of Rotary clubs worldwide, with an increasing number serving as district governors Elizabeth S. Demaray begins her term as treasurer, the first woman to serve in this position Anne L. Matthews begins her term as the first woman to serve as RI vice president.

3 Rotary District 6110 Newsletter MAY, 2015 Page 3 Gary C.K. Huang RI President MAY 2015 One of my favorite parts of a Rotary convention is the House of Friendship. In Chinese, we say: 有朋自遠方來, 不亦樂乎. "To have friends come together from faraway places is a wonderful thing." At the 106th annual Rotary International Convention, 6-9 June, the House of Friendship will reflect the excitement and the diverse blend of cultures of São Paulo, the host city. In between general sessions, you can relax and enjoy all that Brazil has to offer sample the cuisine, browse locally made gifts, and take in top-quality entertainment. You also can get ideas for service and find partners at booths showcasing Rotary projects and Rotarian Action Groups. And best of all, you'll have the opportunity to spend time with old friends and make many new ones. The House of Friendship is a wonderful place to bring your convention guests your family and your friends from home. By attending conventions with me, my family experienced the true internationality of Rotary. Eventually my wife, Corinna, and all three of my children joined Rotary clubs. You and your guests will want to be sure to come early for World Water Summit 7, on 4 June, sponsored by the Water and Sanitation Rotarian Action Group, or for the Rotary Peace Symposium, 4-5 June. This year we are honored that Dr. Oscar Arias, former president of Costa Rica, will be the keynote speaker at the Rotary Peace Symposium. Arias received the Nobel Peace Prize for brokering a peace agreement that ended the brutal civil wars in Central America. Other events 4-5 June include the Rotaract Preconvention Meeting, the International Institute, and the Youth Exchange Officers Preconvention Meeting. When the convention is over, spend time exploring all that Brazil has to offer pristine beaches just a few hours away, the excitement and glamour of Rio de Janeiro, and the wonders of the Amazon rain forest. Every year, I return from the Rotary convention inspired to do more, to give more in Rotary service throughout the year. Register today at I look forward to seeing you in São Paulo!

4 Rotary District 6110 Newsletter MAY, 2015 Page 4 The 4-Way Test Speech Contest WINNERS 4-WAY TEST SPEECH CONTEST FINALISTS WERE OVER THE TOP AT DISTRICT TRAINING ASSEMBLY Proving once again to be one of the districts most popular programs, the Final Five from the 4-Way Test Speech Contest inspired the delegates attending the District Training Assembly on May 2nd in Fayetteville. Nick VanSlooten, a Junior from Bentonville, sponsored by the Bentonville Club, took home top honors and a $1,000 first prize. Nick s future plans are to attend Duke University and become a Financial Analyst. Each runner-up received $350. In no certain order the four runners -up were: Meagan Henningsen Rotary Club of Muskogee, OK Haley Welch Rotary Club Southside Tulsa, OK Dania Rahal - Rotary Club of Fort Smith, AR Maggie Wood Rotary Club of Bentonville/Bella Vista Daybreak The final five journeyed through several eliminations to earn the honor of competing at the District Training Assembly. First they had to win at the Club level followed by a contest held by their sponsoring club s Assistant Governor who held yet another competition by grouping all the single winners DVD s from the clubs they were responsible for. Moving to the next level, the students DVD presentations competed in their region. The three regions are comprised of the clubs in Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Missouri/Kansas areas. DVD s of the three finalists from each Region then entered the mid March District Semi-Final competition leaving the Final Five still standing. Demonstrating the highest ideals and goals of Rotary, the Four-Way Test Speech Contest teaches the principles of the Four-Way Test and assists youth in furthering their education and future with monetary awards. It is clearly one of the most popular programs held at the club level and above. For more information on how your club can participate next year, go to under youth services or contact Chair PDG Ron Petersen at ronsr@cbciradio.com Ron Petersen, SR, District Way Test Speech Contest Chairman NEWSLETTER SUBMISSIONS DAVID SAMUEL Please by the 20 th of each month to dsamuel@centurytel.net : BE A GIFT TO THE WORLD RI President-elect K.R. "Ravi" Ravindran chose Be a Gift to the World as his theme for Ravindran urges Rotary members to give the gifts of time, talent, and knowledge to improve lives in communities across the globe. "Through Rotary, we can take these gifts and make a genuine difference in the lives of others and in our world."
