But before striking the arc, did he see the weld preparation and the position of the pieces, understand the metal properties, allow for heating and cooling among other steps? Listen to the Steel summarizes a welder s function to achieve good welded connections. Duane K. Miller, Sc.D., P.E., Manager, Engineering Services and Welding Design Consultant, The Lincoln Electric Company, will talk to the Cleveland Section members at the March 14 meeting about how to Listen to the Steel or, Learning from Failures. It has been said that more is learned from failures than from successes. In this presentation, failures of welded connections from a variety of industries are examined, with a focus on the principle causation of the failure. In some ways, the features left behind on fractured surfaces can be viewed as the steel s attempt to tell us what went wrong, and thus, the failure analysist needs to learn to listen to the steel," that is, to understand the significance of those features. Dr. Miller, a recognized authority on the design and performance of welded connections, is a popular speaker on the subject and has lectured around the world. He publishes frequently and on three occasions, earned the Silver Quill Award of the American Welding Society (AWS) for the excellence of his published work. In 2001, he received the American Institute of Steel Construction's T. R. Higgins Lectureship Award, in 2005, the AISC Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 2015 was named an AWS Fellow. He became the 8 th recipient of the AISC Robert P. Stupp Award for Leadership Excellence in He has authored and coauthored texts and chapters of many handbooks, including the AISC Design Guide on Welding and the Mark s Handbook of Engineering, 11 th Edition. He has appeared as a subject expert on the History Channel and Discovery Channel. Dr. Miller earned a B.S. degree in Welding Engineering from LeTourneau University in Longview, Texas, an M.S. in Materials Engineering from the University of Wisconsin - Milwaukee, and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree from LeTourneau University in He is the immediate past Chair of the AWS D1 Structural Welding Code Committee. He was the first Chair of the Seismic Welding Subcommittee and is a former co-chair of the AASHTO-AWS D1.5 Bridge Welding Code Committee. His current technical involvement includes membership on the AWS D1 committee, the AWS Technical Activities Committee, and the AISC Specification Committee. He also serves as an AWS Director-at-Large. He is a Professional Engineer, Certified Welding Inspector and Qualified Welder. 2 Valentines Day Welder Style At our Valentine's Day meeting February 14, attendees learned how two multi-talented local welders balance form and function, select metals and temper with flame to form a leaf, a bud, a flower, a bouquet. Dan Harrison and Matt Albright described techniques of welded art, gave demonstrations, and allowed attendees to learn a couple fundamentals. A Valentine Italian style dinner, designed by Coyne Catering, that included salad & bread, meat or vegetable lasagna, dessert, beverage, chocolate, and a carnation for attending ladies to take home. Phil and Cathy Schmidt's donated the chocolates and door prizes. Dan Harrison, who has crafted roses and other welded art pieces for a number of years, talked about copper metallurgy, reviewed heat treatment, and discussed copper based filler metals and their applications, such as SiCu and AlCu. Attendees used a torch to color precut leaves. Dan welded the roses with a volt TIG welding machine. One of Dan Harrison s creations Dan Harrison teaches how he creates a rose. Matt Albright, a welding engineer, works as a senior product manager in Lincoln Electric s marketing department during the day and on sculptures and other art pieces at night in his garage. Nominees for Section Offices The officers of the Cleveland Section are taking the names of nominees for section offices to start the annual election process. Elected section officers include the chairman, first and second vice chairmen, secretary, and treasurer, and a member at large. All current Cleveland Section AWS members can run for these offices. The election will be held during the April meeting. In addition to the section offices, the volunteers are welcome to help promote welding and support the Cleveland Section. There are currently openings on various committees, such as Christmas Party and Auction, Membership, Education, and Scholarship. Many of these openings only require one to three hours of your time each month or seasonal. Talk to any of the section officers or board members for more details. Cleveland Section Management The Cleveland Section of the American Welding Society, Inc. adopted updated Bylaws by vote January 10, A summary of the section management and duties of officers follows. The Section Officers consist of a Chairman, a First and Second Vice Chairman, a Secretary, and a Treasurer. Each are elected annually for a one-year term by the members. The Chairman, the First and Second Vice Chairman can hold the same office only two terms in succession. The Section management is vested in an Executive Committee -- the Officers of the Section, the immediate Past Chairman and three Members-at-Large, who are elected to serve for three year terms. Officer Duties The section officer duties are designed to provide members with sound financial base, a varied program, and educational opportunities. The Chairman, acting as chief executive officer, presides at all meetings of the Section and its Executive Committee, subject at all times to approval of the Executive Committee. The First Vice Chairman performs the duties of the Chairman if the Chairman is absent or unable to act, and may be designated to serve as Program Chairman of this Section. The Second Vice Chairman steps up the duties of the Chairman if both the Chairman and First Vice Chairman are unable to act, and may be named as Membership Chairman of this Section.

3 The Secretary keeps minutes of all meetings of the Executive Committee and performs the duties of a recording and corresponding secretary. These include reports of Section meetings and annual reports to the National Secretary of the Society with a copy to the District Director. If the secretary is absent, other officers handle these duties. The Secretary tells the Chairman of all correspondence affecting the Section s activities. The Secretary, or a designated person, arranges for and supervises the mailing of Section meeting notices. The Treasurer, as financial officer of the Section, records complete and accurate accounts of receipts and disbursements, and deposits all funds of the Section as designated by the Section s Executive Committee. The Treasurer prepares a budget based on anticipated income and fixed expenses for submission to the Executive Committee at the first Executive Committee meeting of the fiscal year. The Treasurer disburses the funds as ordered by the Executive Committee, after receipt of proper vouchers. The Treasurer prepares an annual report of receipts and expenditures prior to the end of the fiscal year and forwards a copy to the Secretary of the Society with a copy to the District Director. The Treasurer prepares for each meeting of the Executive Committee a report on the financial status of the Section. To meet the main obligation of the Treasurer as custodian of all Section funds, the Treasurer must insist upon being made aware of every Section activity and be informed as to the possibility of its need for funds, the amount of such and the frequency in order to maintain the Section s welfare with proper financing. Section to Host CWI, Radiographic Exams Cleveland will host three CWI Seminars and Exams in the coming months. The first seminar is May 14 to 19, exam May 20, application deadline April 10. The second seminar is July 16 to 21, exam July 22, application deadline June 12. The third seminar is October 29 to November 3, exam November 4, application deadline September 25. Plus, the Certified Radiographic Interpreter Seminar will be in Cleveland June 5 to 9, with the exam on June 10. The CRI certification can be a stand-alone credential or can exempt you from your next 9-year CWI recertification. Cleveland Section Library Open To Members The Cleveland Section s library of AWS books, codes, and other welding and fabricating publications offers members information to review a code before bidding on a new job, or an inspection question, or material specifications. AWS members can do research at the library or sign out a book.

Schedule for the AWS District 10 Conference Representatives from the district s five sections will vote on scholarships, share success ideas, solve problems, and work together for future projects at the annual District 10 Conference scheduled for Friday, May 5 at Lorain County Community College, 1005 N. Abbe, Road, Elyria, Ohio. This year the Cleveland Section hosts the Conference. LCCC, the home of Weld-ED, the National Center for Welding Education and Training, will provide a meeting rooms and information about Weld-ED. The meeting begins with continental breakfast at 8 am and includes a hot lunch. After lunch attendees can tour the Weld-ED Welding trailer and Lab as well as its Invention Center.
