1 KANSAS SECTION ASABE 2015 Annual Meeting Minutes April 10, 2015 Manhattan, KS Members Present: Forty-nine members or guests registered for the meeting. Thirty-five signed the meeting attendance list, shown in appendix A. In addition, many students attended various parts of the meeting. The 44 th annual meeting was called to order by chair Josephine Boac at approximately 3:30 pm in room 134c of Seaton Hall on the campus of Kansas State University. Chair Boac reviewed the agenda for the meeting and asked for an agenda approval. Ed Brokesh moved to accept the agenda with a second by Freddie Lamm. The agenda was approved. After the review of the previous minutes Maynard Herron moved to approve the minutes; seconded by Lamm. The 2014 minutes were approved. ANNOUNCEMENTS Chair Boac introduced Maynard Herron as the incoming president elect of ASABE and asked him to update the section on ASABE. Herron indicated that he was excited about the opportunity to represent ASABE in various activities and excited about the future of ASABE. He used our own section meeting as an example to indicate the range and versatility of ASABE members. He indicated ASABE membership is around 7800 with members from 90 countries with 78% of the members from the US. About 40 percent of the members are employed in industry and 40 percent in governmental or university positions. He indicated ASABE is working to be involved with young people that may have interest in the profession and cited the E-week Future City activity, which our section participated last January 25, and the on-going relationship with FFA as examples. He also encouraged student to look at the ASABE website to help learn how they might better market themselves to employers. 129 Seaton Hall, Manhattan, KS Page 1 of 9

2 President-elect Heron also indicated the PE exam has been re-written and ASABE has some incentives available to those taking the exam and ASABE is also working on programs for PDU s. He indicated that ASABE is financially sound and that the ASABE Foundation has some incentive funding for ASABE groups for new projects. He closed with a reminder that the next meeting is in New Orleans and the ASABE Board of Trustees has three openings and encouraged members to consider serving. Treasurer s Report Committee Reports Dan Rogers presented the Fiscal Year 2014 Treasurer s Report as shown in Table 1. Freddie Lamm moved to approve the report; seconded by Harold Blume. The motion was approved. Scholarship Committee Dan Rogers reported that the Kansas Section Fund balance was in good shape but still below the recommended principle balance. The most recent recipient of the scholarship was Alexa Jacobs, a sophomore in BSE. The section had also contributed in 2014 to the BAE Student Activity Fund. Kansas Section Member Survey Kari Bigham reported on the results of the membership survey. There were 7 responses to the survey. The results are as follows: Will you be attending this event? 6 said yes 1 said no (due to conflict with other events) Who will be paying for you to attend this event? 4 said "myself" 1 said "employer" 2 skipped Topics they'd like to hear more about: 1. Relevant and hot topics in ASABE 2. Use of unmanned aircraft, precision guidance, and renewable energy activities 3. Current research & new industry products 4. Water resources, energy issues Are you more likely to attend if continuing education credits are available? 2 said "Yes, I will attend if CE credits are provided," 4 said "I don't need continuing education credits so it would not affect my decision," 0 said "No, I will not attend even though CE credits are provided." 1 skipped 129 Seaton Hall, Manhattan, KS Page 2 of 9

Enjoy BSAE [department] updates, seeing people I have not seen in a while, location is convenient, 1 day format If you have attended this event in the past, what is your least favorite part about the meeting? Explain, as needed. 1. The business meeting could take place in considerably less time. 2. Nothing 3. Lack of age diversity in attendees, student presentation time slot seems to run long 4. Parking, business meeting never seems very organized Would you attend a social hour in Aggieville following the event? 5 said "yes" 1 said "no" 1 skipped Is there anything we could add to the meeting or change about the meeting that would increase your interest? 1. A contest and poster session 2. Some student presentations would be a plus. 3. No 4. Break-out sessions that are content-specific (Environmental, Machinery, Biological), ability to attend remotely and for free 5. Get date on calendar sooner, 9-12 months in advance perhaps. Do a monthly newsletter, 1 page or so. Please provide any additional comments or suggestions to assist us in improving the meeting format and attendance. 1. I like the event coordinated with the Engineering Open House. 2. Do a call for papers 4-6 months in advance. OLD BUSINESS There was no old business to be brought before the section. New BUSINESS Kansas Section Awards The Kansas Section member of the Year was Mark Casada and the Young Kansas Section Member of the Year was Lisa Wilkens. 4 Dan Rogers moved to add $1000 to the Kansas Section Scholarship Fund and $1500 to the BAE Student Activities Fund. Freddie Lamm seconded the motion. The motion was passed. Nominations and Election of Officers Following the traditional officer rotation, for 2015 Josephine Boac will be the past chair, Jonathan Aguilar will be chair and Kari Bigham will be first vice chair. Ryan Zecha was elected 2 nd vice chair. Chair Boac also asked for volunteers for several committee openings. She appointed Rumela Bhadra to the membership committee and Ed Brokesh to the Continuing Education committee. See Table 3 for the full slate of officers, committees and terms. ASABE Representative No additional report (see announcement section) Other Discussion The 2016 meeting will be held in conjunction with the 2016 Open House.
