3 Jumaane Williams When Letitia James becomes New York State Attorney General, she will have to vacate the position of New York City Public Advocate, which will trigger a special election to replace her. Jumaane Williams has declared his intention to run for Public Advocate and will a guest speaker at our November 20 General Membership Meeting. Copied below is the announcing his candidacy. F rom:... Jumaane Date:... Oct 26, 2018 at 4:50 PM Subject:... Exciting news to share Hi Friend, I know it's been a while but I have some very exciting news to share. I've officially thrown my name in the hat to run for Public Advocate. The current Public Advocate, Letitia James, is running to become our state's next Attorney General. If and when she wins the election on November 6th, I will officially launch my campaign to fill its vacancy as the People's Public Advocate. The grassroots campaign we built together to become the People's Lieutenant Governor saw historic enthusiasm last month. More than 640,000 New Yorkers came to the polls to vote for our shared vision of a people's champion in government-- nearly 430,000 of those votes came from supporters throughout the five boroughs which helped us win the entire city. That was staggering and humbling, and I thank you all. As I've said, we shook up the world. Since then, I've spent the last month reflecting and thinking about exactly how best to continue the fight for the people, to champion the pressing issues we face and to enact laws that create solutions for New Yorkers struggling to make ends meet. As the Public Advocate, I will be able to elevate the voices of individuals throughout the five boroughs by creating real, progressive reforms. I've been fighting for change in city government for the last decade, and I've got the results to show for it. Now, it's time to step it up-- to build on that work and to go beyond. I'm running to create a New York that's affordable for all. Safe, for all. Just, for all. To combat gun violence and corruption, to stand up for our youth and our seniors. To be a fighter, and create transformational change. Here's how this election will work: On November 6 th, we all need to get out and vote for the Blue Wave on the Working Families Line (Row E). When our next Attorney General, Letitia James, takes office in January, a special election will be called to fill the vacant Public Advocate position. That's not much time, and it means we need to start working right now. Here's what's next: S.I.D.A. November 2018 Page 3

4 1) It's important that we have the resources we need to hit the ground running. Please contribute what you can and ask your friends to join our cause. All donations up to $175 are matchable x6 by the city. That means a $175 donation equals $1,050! Click here to donate now! 2) Show your support for our campaign on social media by tweeting that you're with Team Jumaane using #PeoplesAdvocate & #Jumaane4NYC. 3) This campaign is grassroots driven and powered by the people. If you want to help our campaign in any way, please reach out and let us know what you can do by ing jumaane4nyc@gmail.com. 4) This is the most important piece. On November 6 th, get out and vote to make sure the Blue Wave crashes over New York City, New York State and the entire country by voting on Row E for Working Families Party candidates. The momentum is in our favor, but we can't wait for the wave-- we have to be it. I'm so excited and energized for this next journey, and I hope you'll join us. Let's move forward together. --Jumaane [Mr. Williams official campaign website is Nominating Committee B elow are excerpts from the S.I.D.A. by-laws pertaining to the election of the Executive Committee. Metro New York Health Care for All is a city-wide multi-constituency health care justice coalition founded during the health care reform debate in the early 90 s and they have continued to bring together community groups, labor unions, professional organizations and faith communities to advocate for universal health care and to engage in other strategic health care justice efforts to that goal. Mark Hannay told members that health care remains a top concern for the public this fall and New Yorkers can make a difference in which way our country and state proceed. He explained that our next Congress, State Legislature and Governor will determine the future of health care in the U.S. and here in New York so everyone s vote really counts. Our vote for Health Care project has three goals: to register people to vote, help people understand the key health care issues at stake in the elections and to mobilize people to get to the polls. Mark distributed leaflets to members with information about the Community Town Hall What s at Stake for Health Care in this fall s Elections Scheduled for October 29, 7:00 9:00 p.m. at Nation Builder s Sponsored by NY-11 for Health Care. Mark urged members to attend this Community Town Hall and to talk to the candidates about the issues. Second Guest Speaker Matt Minnella of the New York Democratic Lawyer s Council (N.Y.D.L.C.) told members that the organization is a coalition of lawyers and advocates dedicated to protecting fundamental voting rights, N.Y.D.L.C. works directly with candidates, grassroots groups, local parties and the board of elections to ensure that all eligible persons can register to vote easily, vote conveniently without intimidation; and their votes counted accurately by open and reliable voting systems. S.I.D.A. November 2018 Page 7

8 Matt told members that N.Y.D.L.C. will be focusing on protecting rights for Max Rose this Election Day. He explained that it is a tight race and they need to have a presence in every district. He urged members to volunteer to help, explaining that people can sign up on line and the organization will provide training. Matt explained that this is a great way to get our voices heard. New Business I Mike De Cillis told members that he is working to help Andrew Gounardes, Democratic candidate for N.Y. State Senate, 22 nd District. He mentioned that we are one vote away from Control of the N.Y. State Senate, which is one of the most flippable seats. He urged members to help with Andrew s campaign. He said interested members can contact the campaign directly. Human Rights Committee Chair Clara Ogburn reported that the committee and Steve Harrison will not be meeting until after November 6 th. After they meet they will advise S.I.D.A. of intent to present at the Staten Island Branch N.A.A.C.P. at a future meeting to pursue their support/feedback regarding OPOVA (One Person One Vote). By-Laws Committee Chair Joann Olbrich did not have a report to present. Issues Committee Co-Chairs are Phil Marius and Richard Reichard.
