8 PTA s Legacy in Advocacy 1899 PTAs urged lawmakers to create a separate juvenile court and probation system for children 1920s PTAs worked to expand the healthy school meals program 1922 PTAs nationwide advocated for the enforcement of child labor laws

9 1934 PTA members successfully advocated for the FCCA to better protect consumers, especially children, from advertisements PTAs were influential in supporting the protection and rights of students with disabilities during the creation of IDEA

10 PTA s Legacy in Advocacy 2002 PTAs advocated for a definition for Parent Involvement and reserved funding for family engagement in No Child Left Behind 2010 PTA members provided input and supported college and career ready standards 2015 PTAs advocated for Statewide Family Engagement Centers to be included in the Every Student Succeeds Act as a standalone program

12 Less Funding for Education Administration is eyeing a more than $1.07 trillion budget next year that would shift $54 billion from domestic programs to the nation s military -POLITICO

13 $20 billion campaign promise to expand charter and private school choice options Private School Vouchers Multiple private school choice bills introduced early this Congress Administration is considering a federal tax credit scholarship program

14 Deregulation Agencies should eliminate at least two regulations for each new one -The Washington Post reported Regulations Freeze (ESSA regulations) Rescind Regulations and Guidance Example: Rescission of Title IX guidance for transgender students

15 Implementation of ESSA Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) became law December 10, 2015 House passes H.J. Res 57 to disapprove regulations under ESSA ( )

25 After the Meeting: Keep the Pressure On Send a follow up to your Member of Congress Tell your Member of Congress to invest in public education and fund SFECs by sending a letter through the PTA Takes Action Center

26 After the Meeting: Keep the Pressure On Invite your Member of Congress to visit or attend a PTA meeting and/or event Schedule to meet with the state or district office when you get back to follow up
