4 Preface Welcome to the LL.M. Program! This guide is intended to help you research and compose a tentative course schedule for your time at Moritz. We recognize that the many choices in courses, while exciting, can be overwhelming. Will you need classes to prepare for taking a bar exam? Will your chosen classes help you in your current job? Or will your chosen courses provide a boost to your resume as you look for a job? We hope this curriculum guide will help you make decisions about your coursework, while you consider your needs for the future. The LL.M. Guide to the Curriculum is divided into three sections. Section I offers general information governing the curriculum, including graduation requirements and the course selection process. Section II materials identify possible areas of intellectual and practice interest in the law and offers advice on how a student with interest in an area might arrange his or her coursework. Section III provides a blank worksheet to use in planning your schedule, and a sample completed worksheet. The sample is not meant to encourage or discourage you from taking a particular class; rather it is meant to show you what a completed worksheet will look like. Your worksheet and accompanying CSS document (see below) will form the basis for your discussion with a member of the International and Graduate Affairs staff in early summer. You will receive feedback and coaching, relative to your future goals. After the meeting, we will register you for your classes. Welcome to one of the most exciting times of your life! We are glad you have chosen Moritz to be your homeaway-from-home for the next year.

5 SECTION I: GUIDELINES FOR COURSE SELECTION A. GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS 1. Total Credit Hours Required LL.M. students must take a minimum of 24 credit hours to obtain their degree. The average class has three credit hours. This means that class will meet for approximately three hours per week. Twelve credit hours per semester will roughly translate to four classes each semester. Students may take additional credit hours with the permission of the Assistant Dean. 2. Course Requirements for Graduation Only two courses are required for the LL.M. program. Both are offered only in the fall semester: US Legal System and Legal Traditions (3 credits) LL.M. Legal Writing (2 credits) All law students are required by the ABA to have legal writing; some states bar exams also have a legal writing requirement. The required LL.M. Legal Writing course fulfills both of these. The remaining 19 credits can be made up of courses of the student s own choosing, with guidance and approval from the Assistant Dean for International and Graduate Affairs. 3. Prerequisites and Permissions Some advanced courses will have a prerequisite listed, meaning that you will need to take a basic course first. Some professors will allow LL.M. students to use courses taken in their home country or use years of practical experience to substitute for a stated prerequisite. LL.M. students may also be allowed to take the prerequisite course concurrently with a chosen course, since they are limited to only one year of study. The Assistant Dean will work with the student and the professor in question to determine if the advanced course can be taken. B. COURSE REGISTRATION PROCESS 1. Begin with the end in mind. Are you interested in a bar exam? If so which one? Our Office drafted summaries of the requirements for jurisdictions that tend to be popular with our student body. Links to the summary pages are included below. Remember, these requirements can change without notice. It is your responsibility to know the official requirements for applying to a particular state s bar exam. Therefore, be sure to also check the state s website (official links available on the respective summary page) to see if you are on the right track. New York Ohio Washington DC California Another resource is the ABA s Comprehensive Guide to Bar Admissions Requirements. Since the New York bar exam is the most popular, we specifically included the subject eligibility requirements here: The New York bar requires you to take at least six credits of subjects tested in the bar exam. The general subject areas that may be tested are as follows:

6 1. Administrative law; 2. business relationships, including, business corporations, limited liability companies, and partnerships; 3. civil practice and procedure; 4. conflict of laws; 5. contracts and contract remedies; 6. criminal law and procedure; 7. evidence; 8. matrimonial and family law; 9. professional responsibility; 10. real property; 11. torts and tort damages; and 12. trusts, wills and estates. You must also take at least two credit hours of a course in Professional Responsibility. The New York State Board of Law Examiners adopted the Uniform Bar Examination and will now administer a separate online-based course and examination for state-specific testing. For details, read here (BOLE s UBE Information Page) and here (NY Law Course and NY Law Examination Materials). The Assistant Dean will provide additional guidance and support as you work through the state-specific material. If you have a question about which Moritz courses will fulfill a particular bar exam s subject requirements, you should consult the Assistant Dean for clarification. If you have ANY intention of taking a bar exam, whether soon after graduation or in the distant future, you should add Professional Responsibility to your list of courses. It is required by nearly all states. Are you interested in a concentration? A concentration is a valuable addition to your resume. We will provide a certificate at graduation. Fulfillment of the requirement means you will take 12 credits in the concentration subject. To determine if a course is appropriate to use in earning your concentration, please visit the Course Explorer, and browse by category using the drop-down menu. Which subjects would help the most in your current job? Most students will opt to concentrate their courses in a specific subject area, such as business or dispute resolution, perhaps based on their firm s specialty or on their current clientele. Be aware that you will have the freedom to take a mix of classes. You might want to utilize this time to explore areas that you have not considered before. You can find examples in Section II, under the Related Courses section in each subject area. 2. With these thoughts in mind, begin your exploration. Course information for the academic year is posted on the Registrar s section of the College website. You will find the most complete and updated course listings as well as detailed course descriptions (including a listing of any prerequisites) for each course offered on the Moritz website.

Students are strongly encouraged to consult, review, and rely on the full course descriptions online, NOT the short versions included in Section II Part B of this guide. 3. Check the times and days. 8 Notes about these pages: These spreadsheets are updated by the Registrar more than once prior to the start of each semester. Therefore, you need to use the most up to date links that are posted to the Registrar s website. These documents contain the list of courses and course numbers, and also the days/times, number of credits, and the professor who is teaching. This will be important, as you begin to ascertain which courses interest you. You will need to see how they fit into your schedule. We suggest that you print fall and spring semester lists. The catalog number is the number you will use to cross-reference with the descriptions from the websites listed above. As you make your notes, please indicate BOTH the catalog number and the class number. They will be important later. 4. Plot your choices on the worksheet. Please print the form (perhaps a few copies) at the end of this document. This is your worksheet. You may wish to have two or even three copies going as you make notes. 5. Course Enrollment Limits, Waiting Lists, and Credits per Semester Maximum Course enrollment limits. Each course offered has an enrollment limit. Enrollment limits are set based on the class characteristics. All courses have a set number of seats reserved for LL.M. students. Waiting lists. When being registered by LL.M. program staff, students can be placed on a waiting list for those classes that are oversubscribed. If an opening in the class occurs, either during the registration process or, more typically, as the semester is about to begin, students are automatically enrolled in the course in the order in which their names appear on the list. Students are therefore advised to monitor their waitlisted classes and their schedules via Buckeye Link. (You will receive instructions for using Buckeye Link during orientation.) Credit per semester maximum. Most students will register for 12 credits each semester. Some students (especially those intending to take the Ohio or Washington DC bar exams) will need to register for 15 credits per semester. Fifteen credits per semester is the maximum for LL.M. students. 6. Take a break and circle back. After you have 1-3 drafts of your schedule for the fall and spring semester, put them aside. Looking at them from another angle would be beneficial. The professor teaching the class might be another factor in your decision-making. You may be familiar with a particular professor and would like to be sure that you can take a course or two from him/her. Now is the time to check your courses via the course listing to see if you have chosen this professor. You can browse their biographies by subject area here. If you find someone whose expertise piques your interest, you can then use the Course Explorer to search for classes by professor name. Remember to always check the online course listings to ensure a particular course is offered this year. Make changes to your worksheets accordingly. 7. Prepare your curriculum summary statement (CSS). After you have a worksheet (or two) full of courses that will support your future career needs, it is time to prepare for your meeting with the Assistant Dean. Please draft a one- to two-page statement of your rationale in choosing your draft schedule. The Assistant Dean will be able to read the CSS and your worksheet in advance of your Skype meeting, and be well-prepared to advise you per your interests and intentions, within the limits of your schedule and any other requirements (bar exam, prerequisite classes, etc.).

10 SECTION II: COURSE AREAS ADMINISTRATIVE LAW AND GOVERNMENT REGULATION Government regulations and administrative law the law that governs the decision making procedures of administrative agencies, their place in the constitutional order, and judicial review of administrative decisionmaking reach virtually every aspect of modern life. Legislative bodies and the agencies they create at the federal, state, and local levels shape public policy and regulate a vast range of our economic, social, and political activity. Students interested in practicing law in highly regulated areas, including civil rights, consumer finance, election law, health care, education, environmental protection, immigration, privacy, securities law, tax, and telecommunications, for example, all will benefit from course work in administrative and regulatory law, as well as advanced study in the legislative process. Through these courses, students learn to develop, advocate for, and implement policy solutions and government interventions of potentially enormous impact. 13 CIVIL RIGHTS (INCLUDING GENDER, RACE, AND SEXUAL ORIENTATION) Some of the most well-known legal battles in American history have involved questions of civil rights school desegregation, voting rights, gender discrimination in hiring, and more. But, this broad field is constantly evolving and today includes discrimination against racial minorities, immigrants, women, LGBT individuals, the disabled, and others. The field of civil rights law involves both statutory and constitutional laws that protect individual and political rights, and the Moritz curriculum reflects a deep commitment to studying civil rights, inequality, and the role of law. 14 CLINICS AND EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING Experiential learning allows students to practice critical lawyering skills and to apply the substantive law learned in the classroom in complicated, real-world settings. Moritz offers an array of live-client clinics, simulation-based skills courses, and courses that combine classroom teaching with field-placement projects. First, public international law includes the rules that govern the relations among nation-states to create order, prevent war, and facilitate cooperation. Ohio State has led law schools nationally in the creation of the Program on Law and Leadership, designed to prepare students during law school to be effective in a variety of leadership roles, as well as to acquaint them with the dynamics faced by leaders whom they will represent. Every lawyer in the country must take a written exam on professional responsibility, in addition to the bar exam, before he or she can be admitted to the bar, but ethical lawyering about more than just the code. 34 LEGISLATION AND THE LAW OF THE POLITICAL PROCESS A large part of the work done by lawyers involves drafting, enforcing, implementing, interpreting, and litigating about statutes. In addition, many lawyers deal regularly with legislative bodies. A knowledge and appreciation of the legislative law-making process is not only a prerequisite to working with legislative bodies but an important aid in working with statutes, ordinances, and regulations. Moreover, a lawyer's knowledge of legal remedies must include that which might be called the legislative remedy. Legislation, as a subject of study in law school, does not present itself as a coherent body of law, information, or processes. It assumes no background in accounting and business and will be helpful in the practice of law, as well as in mastering basic tax and business courses in law school.
