3 3 Walking Away from Terrorism Accounts of Disengagement from Radical and Extremist Movements John Horgan, Pennsylvania State University, USA Series: Cass Series on Political Violence John Horgan s contribution is immense This is a must-read book for any person who wishes to understand the complex psychological processes that influence terrorists behavior and especially what makes terrorists relinquish violence. - Ariel Merari, Tel Aviv University, Israel Why do individuals stop being terrorists? Drawing from fascinating personal interviews, psychologist John Horgan answers this question, demolishing myths and replacing them with real stories about real people...a superb book, packed with welcome insights. - Audrey Cronin, US National War College John Horgan s meticulous research breaks new ground. His acute understanding of the complex factors that can lead to disillusion and withdrawal from terrorism makes this book an indispensable source for academics and the security professionals. - Paul Wilkinson, University of St. Andrews, UK This accessible new book looks at how and why individuals leave terrorist movements, and considers the lessons and implications that emerge from this process. Focusing on the tipping points for disengagement from groups such as Al Qaeda, the IRA and the UVF, this volume is informed by the dramatic and sometimes extraordinary accounts that the terrorists themselves offered to the author about why they left terrorism behind. The book examines three major issues: what we currently know about de-radicalisation and disengagement how discussions with terrorists about their experiences of disengagement can show how exit routes come about, and how they then fare as ex-terrorists away from the structures that protected them what the implications of these findings are for law-enforcement officers, policy-makers and civil society on a global scale. Concluding with a series of thought-provoking yet controversial suggestions for future efforts at controlling terrorist behaviour, Walking Away from Terrorism provides an comprehensive introduction to disengagement and de-radicalisation and offers policymakers a series of considerations for the development of counter-radicalization and deradicalisation processes. This book will be essential reading for students of terrorism and political violence, war and conflict studies, security studies and political psychology. May 2009: 234 x 156: 216pp Hb: : Pb: : ebook: Leaving Terrorism Behind Individual and Collective Disengagement Edited by Tore Bjørgo, Norwegian Institute of International Affairs (NUPI) and John Horgan, Pennsylvania State University, USA Series: Cass Series on Political Violence The conclusions drawn up by Bjørgo and Horgan summarise the editors own considerations on the debate, based on the case studies employed by all of the contributors, and offer the reader some final concepts and questions upon which to reflect. This, along with the wealth of information offered by such a broad range of empirical data and case studies, make for a captivating read. - Natasha Kingston, University of Bath, UK This new edited volume expands our understanding of the processes by which individuals and groups disengage from terrorism. While there has been a growing awareness of the need to understand and prevent processes of radicalization into terrorism, disengagement and deradicalization from terrorism have long been neglected areas in research on terrorism. This book uses empirical data to explore how and why individuals and groups disengage from terrorism, and what can be done to facilitate it. The work also presents a series of case studies of disengagement programmes, from Colombia, northern Europe, Italy, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia, comparing and assessing their various strengths and weaknesses. In light of the lessons learned from these cases, this book describes and explains the potential for new developments in counter-terrorism. This book will be of great interest to all students of terrorism studies, war and conflict studies, international security and politics in general, as well as professionals in the field of counter-terrorism. 2008: 234 x 156: 328pp Hb: : Pb: : ebook: Related Journal: Terrorism & Political Violence The Psychology of Terrorism John Horgan Series: Cass Series on Political Violence One of the leading psychologists in the field undertakes a comprehensive examination on one of the most important yet neglected areas in the study of terrorism. The volume comprises contributions from psychologists and writers who have direct experience of researching terrorism. Some have met actual terrorists; others have worked to assist those tasked with the serious responsibility of combating terrorism. January 2009: 234 x 156: 224pp Hb: : ebook: Understanding Terrorism and Political Violence The Life Cycle of Birth, Growth, Transformation, and Demise Dipak K. Gupta, San Diego State University, USA Highly recommended - R.G. Mainuddin, Choice Reading this book, it is clear that it is a labor of love. A combination of personal detail (a terrific opening section that will surprise many familiar with his previous work), literary observations, crossdisciplinary references that never feel clumsily juxtaposed, and examples drawn from across conceptual boundaries provide the reader with a richly potent stew of material to contemplate. What Gupta ultimately provides in his dynamic conceptual framework is a research agenda, rich for potential hypothesis testing. Gupta rises to the challenge laid down by Walter Reich and others in terrorism studies by moving beyond the confines of individual disciplinary perspectives, and for that alone should be praised. That he does so by providing a thoughtful, learned volume is even more reason to read this important and essential book. - John Horgan, Pennsylvanian State University, USA 2008: 234 x 156: 304pp Hb: : Pb: : ebook: CONTACT US for further information, strategic_studies@routledge.com ebooks: eupdates:

6 6 Routledge Critical Terrorism Studies Critical Terrorism Studies A Research Agenda Edited by Richard Jackson, Marie Breen Smyth and Jeroen Gunning, all at University of Wales, Aberystwyth, UK Starting from a caustic, but well-founded, assessment of the serious limits of mainstream approaches to terrorism, the many interesting contributions in this precious volume convincingly argue why and how critical thinking can contribute to the understanding of political violence. Donatella Della Porta, European University Institute, Italy In direct response to the growth of a critical perspective on contemporary issues of terrorism, this edited volume brings together a number of leading scholars to debate the need for and the shape of the exciting new subfield of critical terrorism studies. February 2009: 234 x 156: 288pp Hb: : Pb: : ebook: Discourses and Practices of Terrorism Interrogating Terror Edited by Bob Brecher and Mark Devenney, both at University of Brighton, UK and Aaron Winter, University of Abertay Dundee, UK This interdisciplinary book investigates the consequences of the language of terror for our lives in democratic societies. The approach of this book is in direct contrast with those that either view terrorism simplistically, as a clear reality threatening democratic society and thus requiring certain sorts of response, or argue, equally simplistically, that the invocation of terror is merely the ideological veil for continued capitalist exploitation. While closer in spirit to the second of these, this work does not simply dismiss the discourse on terror, but rather investigates the consequences of this discourse for the organisation of life in democratic societies. February 2010: 234 x 156: 208pp Hb: : ebook: An Intellectual History of Terror War, The State and Violence Mikkel Thorup This book investigates terrorism and anti-terrorism as related and interacting phenomena, undertaking a simultaneous reading of terrorist and statist discourses in order to reconstruct the dialogue between them. 7 7 Contemporary Terrorism Studies The De-Radicalization of Jihadists Transforming Armed Islamist Movements Omar Ashour, Exeter University, UK What Omar Ashour has produced is truly a pioneering work in an area of growing sociopolitical and geopolitical significance. Saad Eddine Ibrahim, Harvard and American University in Cairo, Egypt The book addresses a highly important yet little researched topic... It offers conceptualization, theory and original research... Ami Pedahzur, University of Texas at Austin, USA The book offers a detailed and well-presented analysis of deradicalisation processes involving several of the most important Islamist insurgent/ terrorist movements today. The manuscript presents very important new insight into how and under which circumstances militant Islamist organizations may deradicalise and renounce political violence. Given the obvious policyrelevance of the analysis as well as its detailed and well-researched presentation of Islamist militancy in Egypt and Algeria, this manuscript will also be very useful in professional training for security/counterterrorism professionals as well as in graduate courses in Middle Eastern studies and graduate courses on international terrorism. Finally, it extracts policy prescriptions specifically relevant to ending the campaign of al-qaeda and its associates, moving towards a post-al-qaeda world. 2008: 234 x 156: 86pp Pb: : Contemporary Security Studies Series Edited by: James Gow and Rachel Kerr, both at King s College London, University of London, UK US Counter-Terrorism Strategy and al-qaeda Signalling and the Terrorist World-View Joshua A. Geltzer, Yale University, USA This book examines the communicative aspects and implications of US counter-terrorist policies towards al-qaeda. The book investigates in what ways, and to what extent, US officials believed that the signals sent by what America did and said could influence the behaviour of the terrorist and would-be terrorist. The study then analyses how those drawn to al-qaeda were and still are likely to be influenced by the perceptions of America that Washington s policies generated. September 2009: 234 x 156: 224pp Hb: : ebook: Women and Political Violence Female Combatants in Ethno-National Conflict Miranda Alison, University of Warwick, UK This book directly challenges the stereotype that women are inherently peaceable by examining female combatants involvement in ethno-national conflicts. Women and Political Violence draws upon empirical case studies of Sri Lanka and Northern Ireland and contains original interview material from the author s extensive fieldwork. February 2009: 234 x 156: 304pp Hb: : ebook: War, Torture and Terrorism Rethinking the Rules of International Security Edited by Anthony F. Lang, Jr. and Amanda Russell Beattie, both at University of St. Andrews, UK This book seeks to demonstrate how rules not only guide a variety of practices within international politics but also contribute to the chaos and tension on the part of agents in light of the structures they sustain. Four central themes- practice, legitimacy, regulation, and responsibility- reflect different dimensions of a rule governed political order. The volume does not provide a single new set of rules for governing an increasingly chaotic international system. Instead, it provides reflections upon the way in which rules can and cannot deal with practices of violence. While many assume that obeying the rules will bring more peaceful outcomes, the chapters in this volume demonstrate that this may occur in some cases, but more often than not the very nature of a rule governed order will create tensions and stresses that require a constant attention to underlying political dynamics. This wide-ranging volume will be of great interest to students of International Law, International Security and IR theory. 2008: 234 x 156: 232pp Hb: : Pb: : ebook: Global Biosecurity Threats and Responses Edited by Peter Katona, UCLA, USA, John P. Sullivan, National Terrorism Early Warning Resource Center, Los Angeles Sheriff s Department, USA and Michael D. Intriligator, UCLA, USA This book explores a range of biohealth and biosecurity threats, places them in context, and offers responses and solutions from global and local, networked and pyramidal, as well as specialized and interdisciplinary perspectives. Specifically covering bioterrorism, emerging infectious diseases, pandemic disease preparedness and remediation, agroterroism, food safety, and environmental issues, the contributors demonstrate that to counter terrorism of any kind, a global, networked, and multidisciplinary approach is essential. 9 9 Routledge Studies in Liberty and Security Series Edited by: Didier Bigo, Elspeth Guild and R.B.J. Walker This book series will establish connections between critical security studies and International Relations, surveillance studies, criminology, law and human rights, political sociology and political theory. To analyse the boundaries of the concepts of Liberty and Security, the practices which are enacted in their name (often the same practices) will be at the heart of the series. These investigations address contemporary questions informed by history, political theory and a sense of what constitutes the contemporary international order. Exceptionalism and the Politics of Counter-Terrorism Liberty, Security and the War on Terror Andrew W. Neal, University of Edinburgh, UK This book is an analysis and critique of the concepts of exception and exceptionalism in the context of the politics of liberty and security in the so-called War on Terror. Based on empirical studies of Muslims in the US and Western Europe, this edited volume posits the situation of Muslim minorities in a broader reflection on the status of liberalism in Western foreign policies. July 2010: 234 x 156: 224pp Hb: : Global Terrorism and Media The Post Al-Qaeda Generation Philip Seib, University of Southern California, USA and Dana M. Janbek, University of Miami, USA Global Terrorism and Media examines the content of terrorist websites and television channels, and includes images taken from these sources. It looks at terrorism 2.0, which relies on the interactive nature of new media to build virtual organizations. The book pays particular attention to the insidious terrorist media effort directed at children, which is evidence of the long-term strategy that some terrorist organizations have adopted, and the relationship between terrorists media presence and actual terrorist activity. The book also includes a provocative chapter offering advice about a strategy for fighting back by using the same media that terrorists rely on. Defeating terrorism means going beyond Al Qaeda and using the media weapons that terrorists wield so effectively; this book explains how. This book will be of much interest to students of terrorism studies, media and communication studies, security studies and political science.
