(Co- recipient of the 2010 Donna Lee Van Cott Award from the Political Institutions Section of the LASA.) This book develops a sequential theory and method to explain the origins of decentralization trajectories and their markedly divergent effects on the distribution of power among national and subnational executives. It analyzes the decentralization reforms taking place in Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, and Mexico from the late 1970s to the late 1990s. The research is based on extensive fieldwork, in- depth interviews, archival records, and governmental data Falleti Tulia G. and Fabián E. This book studies the determinants of civic engagement in local institutions and its consequences for policy- making and democratization. Framed within the larger context of regional participatory experiences, the book analyzes local community participation in the public health sectors of Argentina and Brazil in order to explain the largely divergent trajectories and effects of local community participation. 6

This book is under contract with Oxford University Press, for an estimated publication date of Fall The volume provides a comprehensive assessment of the contributions of historical institutionalism to the field of political science and of its intellectual agenda for the future. A first section on Theoretical Foundations is followed by four sections on topics and problems pertaining to the subfields of Comparative Politics, American Politics, International Relations, and European (Union) Politics.
