3 1.0 Scope This policy covers the naming (or renaming) of parts of the University estate including: buildings parts of buildings (e.g. lecture theatres, laboratories, seminar rooms) identifiable external spaces (e.g. quadrangles) roads collections and archives. This policy is relevant to all members of the University Community i.e. students, staff and University Council. The policy also applies to other occupiers of the University Estate. 2.0 Policy Statements General Principles 2.1 The naming of buildings and places on the University Estate contributes to the University s identity through recalling its heritage, indicating its contemporary identity and forming part of its brand. In addition, naming has an important utilitarian function, contributing to wayfinding. As a general principle, naming should be consistent and part of an overall concept, and should be part of a stable system that is changed infrequently. 2.2 When a building or a place is named for a person, the person should not normally be a living person. If a building or place is to be named after a person or organisation there should be some connection between the University and the person or organisation whose name is being proposed. Proper due diligence may be carried out in respect of proposed names whether of persons or organisations. 2.3 As is general practice in higher education, a building or a place may be named in recognition of a significant donation or contribution in kind to the University. Naming rights may reflect the generosity and provenance of the gift. 2.4 While there may be an undertaking that a name will be used for a minimum period of time, no name is given in perpetuity. 2.5 No name will be approved that implies the University s endorsement of a partisan political or ideological position. This does not preclude the use of a name of an individual who has at one time held public office or the name of an individual or a company that manufactures or distributes commercial products. 2.6 The University reserves the right to rename buildings/parts of the estate in response to changing circumstances. Process 2.7 The University Council will approve the names of buildings/ parts of the estate on the recommendation of the Executive. 2.8 In considering proposals for the naming of buildings/ parts of the estate, the Executive will take account of the advice of the Place Renewal Group, the Director of University Development, and the Director of Communication and other appropriate processes of consultation. 2.9 The Executive may approve generic names for facilities, for example the Arts Building The Executive Director of Estates and Property Services will be responsible for maintaining a register of all approved names. 5 Appendix A: Estates Naming VC Guiding Statement The naming of buildings, places and transit lines across the campus is an essential part of place making, providing a coherent and compelling sense of identity and recognition. The commissioning of our two new buildings provides us with the opportunity to strengthen place making across the campus, enabling in turn the deepening and strengthening of our brand and our recognition. In developing a naming concept for spaces and buildings on the campus, we have followed some underlying principles while, at the same time, maintaining flexibility. We have used a combination of historic place names, anchoring us to our history in Salford, references to our natural context that point to the greening of this part of Salford, and the names of people. Where we have adopted the names of people, we have recognised distinction in public service and in the professions and creative and academic areas associated with the university.
