1 For BUSA Members Edition 9 OCTOBER 2017 BUSA NEWS BULLETIN In this edition Mr Martin Kingston (BUSA Vice President) at the 22 nd Nedlac Summit Nedlac Summit 2017 Small Business Promotion Cooperation & Influence Globally on labour market productivity through health Stakeholder Engagement Trade Promotion NHI Task Team Education & Skills Member Updates & Upcoming Events NEDLAC SUMMIT A business delegation, led by Vice President Martin Kingston attended the 22nd NEDLAC Annual Summit. The theme was Restoring Integrity by Combating Corruption through Good Governance. Cas Coovadia, Chair of the Audit and Risk Committee and BUSA Board member participated on a panel discussion on the role of good governance. Business Unity South Africa (BUSA) committed, alongside social partners, to engage immediately, comprehensively and unequivocally in curbing the scourge of corruption that is stifling South Africa s economy.

2 SMALL & MEDIUM ENTERPRISE PROMOTION SAB JOBS LAUNCH BUSA attended SAB s entrepreneurship campaign aimed at helping South African entrepreneurs create jobs by 2021 through a programme that would increase opportunities for entrepreneurs to become part of SAB s supply chain. As one of the policy priority areas, BUSA views the Entrepreneurship as the backbone of any economy and strongly supports efforts to grow emerging enterprises. SAB s entrepreneurship initiative is also in line with BUSA s approach to black economic empowerment and inclusive economic growth. BUSA identified enterprise development as one of the key enablers in deracialising the South African economy and growing employment opportunities. The potential to add many small and growing businesses owned and controlled by black people is an obvious avenue through which to activate inclusive economic growth. BUSA welcomed and congratulated SAB on this initiative. STAKEHOLDER ENGAGEMENT BAIN & COMPANY CO-OPERATION & INFLUENCE IN GLOBALLY ON LABOUR PRODUCTIVITY THROUGH HEALTH US-SA ROUNDTABLE As part of the 10th Strategic Drivers under co-operation and influence in SADC, Africa and Globally. BUSA was invited to an engagement by the US Chamber of Commerce s Global Initiative on Health and the Economy on the 28th of September 2017 at the Sheraton Hotel in Pretoria. The event was attended by representatives from the US Chamber of Commerce in South Africa, representatives of pharmaceutical companies from South Africa, the US and Dubai. The purpose of the engagement was to discuss the rise of non-communicable diseases, absenteeism, the effect on labour productivity, and its effects on the economy in South Africa. Stakeholders exchanged information with regards to regulatory burdens and their effects on the pharmaceutical industry in the country. Of particular interest was the fact that non-communicable diseases have taken over from HIV/AIDS as the number one cause of death in the country. The session was a learning opportunity for BUSA with many delegates expressing interest in the upcoming NHI negotiations and potential impacts for business. BUSA President, Jabu Mabuza participated on a panel at Bain & Company s Great Boards launch - setting the bar for excellence and accountability in turbulent times. The emphasis was in the areas of governance, such as strategy and culture, consequently inhibiting the full impact potential of directors. Other speakers included Joachim Breidenthal, Partner, Bain & Company, Busi Mabuza, Chairperson, IDC, Sipho Pityana, Chairperson, AngloGold Ashanti, Michael Spicer, Deputy Chairperson, Wesgro. 2
