The I The Guardian Newspaper ownership has become concentrated in the hands of a few very large corporations. Also called conglomerates. This media concentration is hegemonic and can threaten plurality. The story of newspapers is also the story of big powerful media bosses such as Rupert Murdoch Lord Rothermere Lord Northcliffe Barclay Brothers
5 Left wing Centre Right Wing communism Labour Greens Lib-Dems Conservatives Socialism Tories Labour traditionally the party of the Trade Unions (ie workers not the bosses). Support greater state control Fairer distribution of wealth Supporting public services, The poor, needy, vulnerable minorities. UKIP Traditionally supporting landowners, property owners, landlords, bosses; Also favour: big business, traditional values patriotism, Church of England free market; THE ESTABLISHMENT Low taxes, small government = minimal gvmnt intervention in everyday life

In 2011 a famous Murdoch- owned tabloid called the News of the World was closed down because of its role in the Millie Dowler phone-hacking scandal; part of the wider issue of press freedom vs invasion of privacy and paying the police for information.
7 DMGT (The Mail Group) a typical media conglomerate Up to Sept 2018, the Mail, under its editor Paul Dacre had a very right-wing, anti-immigrant, pro Brexit position. It now has a new editor Geordie Greg and has been more moderate and restrained in its coverage and front page language.
