2 FIFTH UNESCO YOUTH PEACE AMBASSADOR TRAINING WORKSHOP HOLISTIC VIEW OF PEACE, HEALTH, DEVELOPMENT, AND ENVIRONMENT (YPA5) DATE : 6-14th NOVEMBER 2012 VENUE : BANGKOK AND KAENG KRACHAN, THAILAND UNESCO is building peace in the world through empowering youth from different countries across Asia and the Pacific, and across the world, to share experiences of working to promote the culture of peace and to develop practical action plans with the inspiration of the young people. Since 2010, UNESCO, in cooperation with partner institutions has organized four Youth Peace Ambassador Training Workshops across the Asia-Pacific with 320 youth from many countries and circumstances. Together, the youth have worked to identify issues that can promote a culture of peace, and developed 120 action projects promoted at making difference in their communities. Through the Youth Peace Ambassador Programme, UNESCO is harnessing the power, optimism and influence of young people to promote action and change for Peace. The outcomes we could help achieve include: Strengthening the youth peace ambassador network of young people as a forum for the exchange of ideas and good practices for effecting social change for peace Reducing the suffering from conflicts and violence Broadening aspects of participant life plans from a multicultural perspective Support for specific youth-led projects to be implemented in different countries Expand the integration of security and peace activities into policy making, with special relevance to young persons With the help of Ministry of Higher Education in Malaysia, all the Malaysians delegates are given the opportunity to join the nine days programme in Thailand. The representatives from Malaysia are Nur Ashilah Binti Ab Malek (representing the Student Representative Council, UPM), Muhammad Afif B. Mohd Salleh (UPM), Nahdzatul Farhana Najwa Binti Mohd Taha (UPNM), Umar Mukhtar Bin Yusoff (UPNM), Mohammad Waffee bin Mohd Shukori (UiTM) and Mohammad Jazmie Bin Jamaludin (UiTM). With this gold opportunity, we hope to instil the enthusiasm and passion in fighting for peace by making a difference in our community to overcome the challenges for our communities and continue the efforts to rebuild the communities in terms of peace, health, development and environment. The first 3 days programme took place in Bangkok. On 6 th November, we checked in into The Campus hostel of Thammasat University at Chiang Rak Road, Klong Luang Pathuerthani in Thailand, along with other delegates from all around the world such as from Romania, Uzbekistan, Turkey, Bangladesh, Japan, China, Philippine, Cambodia, Sri Lanka, India, Nepal, Myanmar, Nigeria, Indonesia, United Kingdom and many more.

3 On 7 th November, we had a day group trip to the ancient capital of Thailand, Ayuthuya and at night, we were entertained by a cultural event and a welcome reception (hosted by JCI Thailand) in Thammasat University, Rangsit Campus. On 8 th November, we had a full day workshop on health and peace. Some of the concerns during the workshop are regarding the Challenges of Child Abuse, Overview of Bioethics, and Cosmetic treatment and skin whitening in Asia. Later on, we went for some small group visits in specific areas of the hospital with experts in variety of areas. The topics covered in the group visits consist of: The severity of child s family and the protection of children and women Emergency Medical Service (EMS) and Emergency Room (ER) system Disabilities Care System, Autism care system, and Physical care system Environmental water treatment and waste management Management system of Out-patients Department, Day care, Wig banking, Privacy protection of infectious disease patients In-Patient Management system, Ward organizations, Specialized center (Stroke, Heart, and Bones; visit to different wards of the hospitals) On 9 th November, we departed to Thai Diamond City, Kaeng Krachan, went to the National Park and checked in into Thai Diamond City Resort. Then, we had a full-time session of peace with nature such as tree planting, nature walk, and also swim and bike for peace. The outdoor activities were exhilarating and engaging. From these activities, we have learnt that only through hardships can we understand the meaning of peace and have serendipity in our heart. At night, we were entertained with a welcome reception and Thai Cultural Show in the swimming pool area, hosted by Oran Foundation in Thai Diamond City. On 10 th November, after the welcome talk by Prof. Darryl Macer, the Founder of Oran Patana Foundation, we had a full day report presentation on Youth Peace Ambassador (YPA) action plans. Some of the action plans include When I was 20 Campaign and The Use of Social Media in Peace Advocacy by Dwight Jason M.Ronan, the Philippines, Save The Environment For Peace by Muzaffarjon Akbarov, Republic of Uzbekistan and Schools for Peace by Anas Ali, Turkey. On 11 th November, we continued the full day presentation along with the workshops on Evaluation and Development of a few action plans. On 12 th November, we had an enjoyable environmental education excursion with river rafting, cave visit and beach picnic. On 13 th November, we had multiple rounds of debate all day. We were assigned with problems and we had to represent stakeholders, such as the government, companies, NGO s, different countries and etc. We need to work in groups and discuss the scenario for further presentations in the plenary sessions. For this session, the Malaysians delegates, in collaboration with 11 other countries; Brunei, Bangladesh, Philippines, Vietnam, Nepal, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, India, Mongolia & Afghanistan had carried out a presentation regarding an action plan on UNESCO Youth Peace Festivals. This action plan, involving the 12 developing & war torn nations participating from all over the world, will be held in their respective countries. Each countries will come up with unique programs in the spirit of peace

4 building and the conclusion from the action plan implemented in each countries will be presented at YPA6 and YPA7. During our last stay in Thailand, after finishing the formal presentation on YPA action plans, we proceeded with the closing ceremony and went straight away to Don Muang airport to depart to our beloved hometown. Last but not least, we were very much honoured, thankful and grateful to have been given the opportunity to grasp a lot of new knowledge, learn about peace in a holistic view and being able to put out our comforts and study them under the light of others misfortunes. Through this experience, we believe that we have grasped all the good moral values and instil in ourselves, the willingness to learn more, do more, and be more. Peace does not mean to be in a harmony place, with no crisis and no war.
