2 PRESENTATION OBJECTIVES Ø Understand the financial aid process and timeline Ø Know the different types of financial aid and how to access them Ø Understand the FAFSA and what documents are needed Ø Understand the CSS Profile and how it is used
3 WHAT IS FINANCIAL AID? Ø Money to help students pay for their college education Ø Some financial aid is FREE Ø Some financial aid is NOT free Ø All financial aid helps pay for college
4 WHAT COSTS ARE ASSOCIATED WITH COLLEGE? Financial Aid assists students in paying for: Ø Tuition and Fees Ø Room and Board Ø Books and Supplies Ø Personal Expenses Ø Transportation AKA: Cost of Attendance
5 TYPES OF FINANCIAL AID Gift Money GRANTS AND SCHOLARSHIPS Earned Money FEDERAL WORK STUDY Borrowed Money EDUCATION LOANS
6 GIFT MONEY: GRANTS AND SCHOLARSHIPS Ø Need-based Grants Ø Eligibility determined by the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) Ø Given by Federal Government and many colleges- especially private Scholarships Ø Can be: Merit-based Need-based Circumstance-based *Grants and scholarships do NOT need to be repaid!
7 EARNED MONEY: FEDERAL WORK STUDY Ø On campus employment Ø It is the student s responsibility to apply and interview for a job Ø Students are paid by a check, and may use the money in a variety of ways *Payment does not go directly towards tuition. Ø Earnings do not count on the next year s FAFSA
8 BORROWED MONEY: LOANS Ø Federal Student Loans: awarded upon completion of the FAFSA -Stafford Subsidized Loans: 5.05% fixed interest -Stafford Unsubsidized Loans: 5.05% fixed interest Ø Federal Parent Plus Loan: 7.6% fixed interest Ø Private or Alternative Loans: Loans from banks and other loan sources, like Sallie Mae *Federal interest rates are set every July. These rates are for loans distributed after July 1, 2018 and before July 1, 2019.
9 Federal Direct Subsidized Loan Ø The U.S Department of Education is the lender. Ø Student is the borrower Ø No credit check is required Ø The school determines the amount a student can borrow, and the amount can not exceed a students financial need. Ø The U.S Department of Education pays the interest on the loan: while a student is enrolled at least part time, first 6 months after leaving school, and periods of deferment. Federal Direct Unsubsidized Loan Ø The U.S. Department of Education is the lender. Ø Student is the borrower Ø No credit check is required Ø The school determines the amount a student can borrow, and the amount can not exceed a students financial need. Ø The borrower is responsible for paying the interest on the loan during all periods. Federal Parent PLUS Loan Ø The U.S. Department of Education is the lender. Ø Parent is the borrower. Ø Borrower must not have adverse credit history. Ø The maximum loan amount is the cost of attendance minus any other financial aid received.
10 HOW TO APPLY FOR FINANCIAL AID? FAFSA Ø Required for all Federal Student Aid CSS Profile Ø Required by select institutions for institutional aid

12 WHAT IS THE FAFSA? Ø FREE- don t pay someone to do it Ø Gives federal and state governments and colleges a baseline for measuring student need Ø Completed every year that the student intends to enroll in college
13 WHEN DO I APPLY? Ø As early as October of senior year Ø Be sure to know your school s deadline! Each school may be different. Ø College funds are limited, so be sure to apply early.

15 WHERE AND WHEN DO I FILE THE FAFSA? Ø Complete the FAFSA online at fafsa.gov Ø The application opens October 1 st for the upcoming academic year.
16 You will need: WHAT DOCUMENTS ARE NEED? Ø FSA ID and passwords Ø Balance of checking & savings accounts Ø Balance of investment accounts Ø Records of untaxed income Ø Retirement accounts are NOT included Ø Copy of 2017 tax return
17 WHY FAFSA? The EFC is a number calculated by the Department of Education based on the information provided in the FAFSA. The EFC will not change from school to school EXPECTED FAMILY CONTRIBUTION (EFC)

20 WHAT IS THE CSS PROFILE? Ø An online application that collects information for specific institutions Ø There are about 400 colleges and universities that utilize the Profile Ø Used to award private, institutional aid, such as grants, loans and scholarships *Federal funds are awarded by the FAFSA
21 DO I NEED TO FILE THE CSS PROFILE? Ø Check your school s financial aid page to see if they require a Profile Ø You can find participating colleges and universities at Collegeboard.org on the CSS Profile page.

24 DOCUMENTS NEEDED TO FILE Ø Current year s federal tax income return Ø Previous year s federal tax income return Ø W-2 forms Ø Record of untaxed income for current and prior year Ø Current bank statements Ø Current mortgage info Ø Records of savings, stocks, bonds and other investments
25 HOW TO APPLY Ø Create an account on Collegeboard.org -Your login info is the same as your SAT login Ø Be sure your application has the correct school year on it Ø Complete the customized pre-application worksheet and instructions

Students must: Receive a service Graduate Complete FAFSA Fill out and sign survey in Naviance in April through June Have enrollment verified in September Will have money sent directly to school half in early October and half in January
