PI for an interdisciplinary study that looks at the impact of information and communications technologies (ICTs) on the capacity of Indigenous and Afrodescendant civil society organizations (CSOs) to promote development and social justice goals. International collaborations include Indigenous academics and civil society leaders. In addition to providing valuable empirical evidence and contributing to a developing area of theory on the use of technology by traditionally excluded actors, the research will help Indigenous and Afrodescendant organizations to develop strategies for using ICTs effectively and will inform NGO allies with respect to supporting their development goals Indigenous Community Engagement and Development in Imbabura, Ecuador Acting as a research consultant to an interdisciplinary team of sociologists, development scholars and indigenous academics from the Universidad Técnica del Norte (UTN) in Ibarra, Ecuador. We are studying participatory development initiatives in indigenous communities in the northern province of Imbabura, including how local mechanisms interact with regional and national governments. Based on my own experience, I have been supporting the team by helping them to
7 develop their theoretical framework, methods and interview questions. We have prepared written and oral reports for the communities studied. September May 2013 Participatory Development in Comparative Perspective Research for PhD Dissertation. Nine months of field work in Venezuela, Ecuador and Chile to study the workings of participatory institutions in marginalized communities. Used qualitative and quantitative methods. Over 220 interviews conducted with citizen participants and public officials, over 400 surveys received and over 50 documents analyzed. June-August 2009 Indigenous Social Movements and Constitutional Reform Research for interdisciplinary M.A. Thesis. Fieldwork in Ecuador and Bolivia to study the impact of indigenous social movements on integrating sustainable and social development goals into the constitutional reform process. Conducted interviews with indigenous movement leaders and activists.
