2 European Reformists SUMMIT The European Reformists Summit entitled 2019, the Democratic Challenge in Europe will be held on the 16th & 17th of November This event is co-organised by the progressive think tanks Les Gracques, Terra Nova, Mouvement Européen France, Fondation pour l innovation politique and Fondation Jean-Jaurès, in partnership with several European think tanks. It aims at gathering high-ranking international leaders in order to discuss the most pressing political, economic and social issues ahead of the crucial European elections. The Summit builds on the European Reformists Summit held in Lyon in 2016 and hosted by its Mayor, Gérard Collomb. Just after Brexit and at the dawn of several electoral challenges all over Europe, we were convinced of the urgent need to make all pro-european reformists of good will stick together. Two years later, after a gathering in Berlin last year, as fragmentation risks remain and populism keeps on rising, it is high time to gather around a European Reformists Summit in Paris in preparation for the coming European elections. French and international political leaders, mayors of major cities, representatives of unions and civil society, economists and business leaders will meet to debate in private sessions. The results of the discussions will be presented to the media and the public during the conclusive part of the event, on Saturday 17 November afternoon. Our partners all around Europe have already assured us of their support to help us get the best out of this event in terms of original ideas, propositions and commitments. 2

3 La Sorbonne: host of the 2018 European Reformists Summit Since the 13 th century, the name Sorbonne has conjured up for the whole world the image of one of the most prestigious centres of intelligence and culture, of science and of the arts, of an age-old knowledge that spans the centuries and one that resounds to this day with the promise of excellence. La Sorbonne is a symbolic place for debates, encounters, exchanges and knowledge sharing. For centuries, throughout the wars and crisis that have shaken Europe s history, intellectuals from all around the continent have gathered around in this prestigious school. The public conference will be held in the Grand Amphitheatre the very place where President Macron pronounced his founding speech on Europe. True to the Sorbonne s enduring reputation as a centre of studies and excellence, the Grand Amphitheatre s dome presents the five large monochrome medallions by Galland depicting Law, Medicine, Science, Arts and Theology, i.e. the five faculties which constituted the University of Paris in This historical place, which has always promoted youth and progress, is perfectly suited to this historical and decisive moment for Europe. 3

4 Organisers of the Summit France s leading political foundation, the Jean-Jaurès Foundation was recognized as being of public utility since its creation in Independent, European and social-democratic, the Jean-Jaurès Foundation pursue the aim to formulate those ideas of tomorrow that benefit all, in order to directly impact public policy through analysis and proposals and help re-conceptualise social democracy around the world, in Europe, and in France. The Fondation pour l innovation politique is a French think tank for European integration and free economy. It has been contributing to pluralist thought and a renewal of public debate since its founding in As a platform for expertise deliberation and debate, the Fondation strives to describe, anticipate and understand the constant evolution of French and, wider, European societies. In order to play an active role in the intellectual debate, the Fondation strives to formulate innovative proposals and bring them to the attention of French and European leaders, from both the economic and political world. Les Gracques is a civil organisation initiated by left-wing personalities, members of cabinets, actors of the civil society, entrepreneurs, teachers, intellectuals, doctors, lawyers, business leaders, students, etc. They want to contribute as a think tank and pressure group in order to foster the intellectual modernisation of the left in France. Their manifesto on the values of a modern left, translated in three languages and published by Le Monde and Corriere della Serra, became one of the fundamental texts for the European left. They intend to continue to develop independently their analysis and proposals to contribute to the advent of reformist ideas of the French left. The Mouvement Européen France is the French branch of the European Movement International which is present in 39 countries. Since 1949, the Mouvement Européen France stimulates a pluralistic discussion on European issues through educational actions, debates with citizens and the formulation of proposals aiming to strengthen European integration. It brings together thousands of volunteers across over 50 local chapters, 20 national associations, and a college of experts from politics, the media, and the business world. The Mouvement Européen France is the number one educational actor from French civil society on European issues. Terra Nova is an independent civil society think tank with the encompassing goals of allowing the renovation of progressive thinking, by publishing and promoting innovative proposals and political solutions in France and in Europe since its creation in 2008, in various thematical fields (education, financial regulation, environment, etc). We provide expertise on political analysis and debate and formulate concrete proposals for our national and local officials, social partners, civil society organisations as well as those who put those policies into practice and vote on them in the last resort: the body of citizens. Our work is driven by a French and European network of politicians, policy-makers, public service professionals and academic researchers. 4
