1 PRELIMINARY PROGRAMME Horn of Africa Conference - Vll Faith, Citizenship, Democracy and Peace In the Horn Africa 17 th - 19 th October 2008, Lund, Sweden Sudan Somalia Ethiopia Eritrea Djibouti Objectives: INFORMATION The overall objective of the conference is to explore ideas by bringing together religious leaders, civics, scholars, practitioners, political leaders, government representatives to share their experience and critical examine how harmonious relationships can be built between different ethnic and religious groups in order to promote democracy and peace. The purpose of the conference is to enhance the capacity of stakeholders in the Horn of Africa as well as academics with new ideas and tools to enable them to act progressively and effectively in favor of promoting democracy, peace and development in the Horn of Africa societies. Further, we hope that mutual dialogue between learned people of various faiths in the region will enhance their collective capacities to reshape the fortunes of the people of the region and enhance the prospects for peace and democratic order. The primary objective of the conference is to: - Identify key characteristics of syncretic religious processes to build democracy and peace in the Horn of Africa. - Raise awareness of contentious issues for long-term development. - Encourage and facilitate dialogue between stakeholders to stimulate community-driven solutions integrated with long-term development plans. - Enable networking among stakeholders such as religious leaders, scholars, civil society and political leaders on peace-building issues. - Assess the impact of the war on terrorism on the radicalization and politicization of religion on the Horn of Africa. The conference will be held in an internationally and culturally known University City of Lund, Sweden. All papers presented, workshops and panel debates will be in English and proceedings of the conference will be published as a book after the conference. Free entrance and it is open to all! 1
