1 Genealogy Society Of Craighead County, Arkansas This month s meeting will be at the Jonesboro Public Library at 2:00 March 21, 2004 VOLUME NUMBER EIGHT, ISSUE NUMBER THREE MARCH 2004 MEETING HAPPENINGS: On February 15, 2004 our meeting was held at the Jonesboro Public Library. Our speaker was Allen Tucker from Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery. He is a Family Service Counselor. We also presented the Library and Mr. Tucker with a copy of Cemetery Book Volume IV (Jonesboro Memorial Park Cemetery). EXECUTIVE BOARD MEETING: The Executive Board meeting for March was held on March 13, 2004 at the Jonesboro Public Library. 1. Ridge Roots 2004 Additional information in the newsletter. 2. Next Beginning Genealogy Class will be March 22 & 23 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm 3. FGS Membership 4. Executive Board Meeting for April is April 10, 2004 at 2:00 pm at the Jonesboro Public Library. MARCH MEETING: The March meeting will be Sunday 21 March 2004 at the Jonesboro Public Library. Our speaker will be Nancy Matthews on Organization Tips and Ideas. DUES Membership Dues are $15 a year from January to January. Please send dues to GSCCA, P.O. Box 844, Jonesboro, AR We would love to have you join us. 2 RIDGE ROOTS 2004 We have been invited by Greene County to co-sponsor a fall seminar. The Seminar is scheduled for October 15,16 & 17, 2004 and the speaker is Leslie Collier. Many of you will remember Leslie from our Ridge Roots 2003 Seminar last March. We will have Leslie for a total of six sessions. Friday, October 15, 2004 will be 1 session in Paragould. Saturday, October 16, 2004 there will be 4 sessions in Paragould and Sunday, October 17, 2004, there will be 1 session in Jonesboro. 3 LOSS OF A FRIEND Many of you already know that we have lost a friend and fellow member of our Society. On March 5, 2004 Ed Gerdes passed away. Most of us have visited his Civil War Pages at Ed s Civil War Pages will remain in place. When the Society started work on the Cemetery Books, Ed spent many afternoons going to all the cemeteries he could find to take a census of them so they could be in our books. He was also the driving force behind the creation of the Obituary Index for the Jonesboro Sun. He spent many hours transcribing microfilm Ed was always the first to stop what he was working on to help someone that came into the Jonesboro Public Library. He worked just as tirelessly for Greene County, Arkansas. Ed helped save Greene County s old records that were in the Mud Room in the basement of the old courthouse. He helped in many other ways that we can only guess at. His contributions were made from the kindness of his heart, not for recognition or recompense. Ed believed in genealogy and the spirit of sharing information. Yes, we have lost a valued member of our Society but most of all we have lost a friend.
