1 Profile Sonya Saul is a junior of 12 years call, who prosecutes and defends in a wide range of criminal cases, including multi-handed violence, arson, robbery, rape and serious sexual offences. She has significant experience of dealing with vulnerable witnesses and defendants. Sonya is a Grade 3 Prosecutor for CPS London and South-East, prosecuting serious general crime. Sonya is a member of the Specialist Rape List and is regularly instructed by the RASSO Unit. Sonya regularly prosecutes multi-handed cases as sole counsel, and has prosecuted silks instructed by the defence. She has prosecuted Special Casework trials and represented the crown in the Appeal Court and the Administrative Court, dealing with Judicial Reviews. She has extensive experience of dealing with PII, surveillance and undercover operations. R v PH (2014) (RASSO London) Stranger Rape: instructed as sole counsel. The complainant had been raped after accepting a lift from a stranger purporting to be a Good Samaritan.

2 R v W (2014) RASSO London) Rape and Historical sexual assault. The defendant had raped two women when he was 18 and sexually assaulted a third when she was 6 and he was 15. R v R and Others (2014) (CPS London) Conspiracy to Rob: instructed as sole counsel. The complainant's home was invaded by four men who tried to rob his family at gunpoint. Cell site information and phone records were used to confirm the location of the men at the time of the incident. R v S (2013) (RASSO London) Rape: instructed as sole counsel. The complainant was the defendant's niece and alleged that he had raped her at his home when she was 13. R v A and G (2013) (CPS London) Sonya was instructed as sole counsel. A, under surveillance for murder, was recorded planning and executing a burglary with G. The defence made numerous applications to exclude the surveillance evidence on the basis that it had been installed for one purpose, but used for another, all of which ultimately failed. Operation Chalais (CPS London s Special Casework Unit) (2012) Instructed as sole counsel, Sonya represented CPS London s Special Casework Unit in two trials (both conspiracies to sell firearms) and numerous sentencing hearings in a major police undercover operation targeting serious crime in Hackney. This operation led to 30 convictions and was widely reported in London. News Report R v H, L and G (2013) Instructed as sole counsel. H s friend was charged with rape. H and his co-defendants, under surveillance for a separate matter, were charged with witness intimidation, after attending a significant witness home with weapons.

3 R v S and Others (2012) Instructed as sole counsel, Sonya prosecuted a four-handed s.18 case concerning a punishment beating of the victim. The men chased him through the streets and beat him with metal pipes. A witness called the police. When the police arrived, they claimed to have been coming to his aid. The witness overheard and identified his purported saviours as his attackers. R v C and Others (2012) Instructed as sole counsel, Sonya prosecuted a multi-handed violent disorder. The victims left a nightclub and were chased through the streets by the defendants for being in the wrong area. One of the victims suffered serious stab wounds as a result. R v M and Others (2011) Instructed as sole counsel, Sonya prosecuted brothers charged with a revenge attack on three complainants. M, after being assaulted on Christmas Day, went with his two brothers to look for the men who attacked them but stabbed and assaulted three innocent men instead. Rape and Serious Sexual Offences: Prosecuting R v A (2013) (RASSO London) Instructed as sole counsel to prosecute a man charged with raping a woman in a lock-up garage R v S (2013) (RASSO London) Instructed as sole counsel to prosecute a man charged with raping his niece. R v H (2013) (CPS London) Instructed as sole counsel to prosecute a defendant charged with sexually assaulting a woman in the street R v W (2012) (CPS London) Instructed as sole counsel to prosecute a man charged with sexually assaulting the daughter of a family friend when she was 8 and he was 13.

4 R v O (2009) (CPS London) Instructed as sole counsel to prosecute a teacher charged with sexually assaulting four pupils (current and former) over 8 years at two different schools. Vulnerable Complainants R v B (2013) (CPS London) Instructed as sole counsel to prosecute a man charged with sexually assaulting two girls aged 8 and 10 in a park. R v D and Others (2012) (CPS London) Instructed as sole counsel to prosecute a man charged with physically assaulting an 18-month old boy, whose injuries included a bite and a serious burn to the sole of his foot. He and his partner failed to treat the injuries and instead tried to hide them. Dental impressions led to D s brother being charged for the bite. R v A and Another (2010) (CPS London) Sonya was instructed as sole counsel. A was charged with beating his 8 year-old daughter with the buckle end of a belt. He then left her in the care of his sister, who went out and left the girl alone inside the locked house for the rest of the afternoon. R v K (2009) (CPS London) Instructed as sole counsel to prosecute a man charged with a robbing a deaf mute at a train station. This trial involved the use of a signlanguage interpreter. General Crime: Defending R v C: (2014) Instructed to represent C, charged with making a threat to kill, Affray and possessing two knives. R v M (2014) Instructed to represent M, charged with a co-defendant with kidnap.
