2 Introduction Concept of an identity and identity number can provoke strong reaction Requirement - Growth of student population necessitated creation of unique ID and ID card ID number crucial link between supporting systems Too much access to too much data Ease of access to services

3 UCC Student ID cards In the beginning. Small Student numbers Trust only registered students on campus along came the laminated ID card... Visual verification Library borrowing via ID card as the UCC community continued to grow Simplification of access rights to buildings and rooms required

4 Current UCC Student Card Services Access Control since 2006 Simply an ID card verify that a student is a student! Laptop borrowing within the Library since 2016 Externally discounts and identification Smartcard payments - since 2014 Car Parking certain student categories only

5 Going Mobile the path for the future Mobile Student ESC Project. The EU estimates that 20% of students will have studied abroad by Mobile ID UCC s Digital ID card project Mobile ID Card printing self-service and on the go.

6 European Student Card - The Mobile Student AIM: The aim of the European student (ESC) card project is to make recognition of student status possible by all HEIs in Europe, so that by presentation of a student's card, a student can assert his / her rights with the HEI that is involved in the project. Core Principles: 1. Membership with the European card system is freely chosen by any institution of higher education. The institution may request or withdraw from membership at any time. 2. Each student registered in an HEI participating in the ESC program is free to opt in or out. 3. Each institution maintains the full control over the process of creating, producing and issuing its student card. 4. Each HEI is free to determine which services are to be made available to ESC students

8 Challenges and Benefits What challenges do we face? Mifare Classic card - limits the services we can offer Dependence on external vendor for development costs in time and money High level of integration between student registration data and services offered how to decouple to offer services to external students? On the Brightside! Simplify mobility for UCC students travelling abroad access to more services more easily May make our university more attractive to international students Help to raise profile of the university with our European counterparts Involvement at the pilot stage allows us to shape the end product; build-in any UCC non-negotiables

Students forget and lose ID cards regularly Accessible Student ID cards are expensive to replace Reduce dependency on card chip technology ID card reprints during office hours only Changes to physical ID card mirrored on Digital card Reliable Student can prove student status without ID card Supplementary ID

10 Creating a Digital ID Initial development only for identification purposes Embed within UCC Connect App Are you who you say you are? use Edugate to authenticate BUT! Agnostic of mobile phone platform Use data from backend database Digital ID will have same data as physical ID card Assumes all students will have a Smartphone Keeping two cards in sync extra effort Ensure all external agencies are aware and recognise it as valid Multiple ID devices will students pass them around? Potential security issue.

12 Conclusion What next? We must Improve - continue to add services to the ID card where they are sensible, of benefit to the user and secure Observe - smartphones are the current trend but this may change. Protect especially as data from the service provider may start to move to the cloud Always keep in mind that an ID card is an identity card first and foremost. Primary function must be maintained above all others.
