Let s celebrate the good news first. A new report from the IUCN has shown that giant panda numbers have gone up. The latest count in China found 1,86 giant pandas living in the wild. Number have gone up by 17% in ten years. The IUCN is an international organisation which looks at animal and plant numbers all over the world. It publishes a Red List of all the world s wildlife. This places each animal and plant into categories which explain its risk of extinction (see below). The giant panda is no longer considered to be endangered. China has been making a great effort to look after its famous black and white bear and it looks as if it is working. The panda is now classed as vulnerable. Giant news for the giant panda! Sadly, it wasn t such good news for the eastern gorilla. The Red List shows that illegal hunting has caused their population to collapse. Numbers have gone down by 70% over the last 20 years. They are now considered to be critically endangered. Conservation International said: We are driving our closest living relatives to extinction, which is sickening.

They have written to Prime Minister Theresa May asking for the Government to spend more money making cycle lanes on Britain s roads. They would like 5% of the money the Government spends on transport to be spent on cycling. Olympic cyclists Jason Kenny, Laura Trott and Sir Chris Hoy have all signed the letter. They know a thing or two about cycling they have sixteen gold medals between them! The letter says that the best way to honour the achievements of our athletes would be to create a network of safe cycling routes in our towns and cities. Safe cycling wouldn t just improve our transport. Encouraging people to cycle instead of drive would improve the nation s health, cut traffic jams and lower pollution, the letter says. It also points out that half of all school children in the Netherlands cycle to school. Meanwhile, TV presenter Steve Backshall is in his girlfriend s bad books after dropping her Olympic gold medal on the floor! Steve (of Deadly 60 fame) is engaged to the Olympic rower Helen Glover. ANIMALS FirstNews Issue September refugee children reach out EVERYONE SAY AHHH! Imgur the.fluffy.duo via instragram Two animal photos have been melting hearts all over the world this week. Meet Hoshi, a blind American Eskimo dog. Hoshi may not be able to see, but he s living a full life thanks to his best friend and guide dog, Zen. When Hoshi was 11 years old, he had to have his eyes removed because he had an eye disease. Shortly before, Hoshi s owners had got another dog Zen, a Pomeranian. They became best friends but, after Hoshi lost his sight, they became even bigger buddies. Zen now acts as Hoshi s guide dog, leading him around whenever they go out for walks. Their owners sometimes attach the dogs leads together, so Zen can lead Hoshi on their walk. In other animal news of the cute variety, a photo of a hamster with a broken leg has become an international hit after being posted on the internet. In the first few days alone it was viewed almost a million times. The picture shows the furry rodent with its foreleg sticking out at an angle, held in place by what appears to be a miniature plaster cast. You just have to look at the person s fingernail to see how tiny the bandage must be!

In a recent survey, 52% of people in Cardiff said that seeing dog poo in public places was the thing they most disliked, beating smoking and littering. The new campaign, called The Big Scoop, reminds pet owners that they can be fined if they don t clean up after their pet. Reports of the biting bugs in homes and gardens around the UK have risen this summer. There are 35 different kinds of mosquitoes in the UK, but only a few of those bite people.
