Astrid Gearin, Hunter Multicultural Youth Network (HMYN) presentation Acknowledgement of Country Astrid Land of the Awabakal people Welcome and introductions Approval of minutes: Oliver Dreyfus Minutes seconded: Lucy Emery Purpose of HMYN: HMYN is a network committed to working on issues in the Newcastle Local Government and the wider Hunter Region that work with multicultural young people including those with a migrant background or refugee experience. HMYN is representative of, and open to all related organisations within the Newcastle LGA and Hunter Region. Our aim as a network is to advocate on behalf of multicultural young people and the sector workers from the Newcastle Local Government and the Hunter Region that work with multicultural young people, while providing opportunities for networking, partnerships, consultation, training and planning within the sector. HMYN is committed to access and equity, social justice, cultural relevance and diversity to guide our work for implementing positive change within the sector. Page 1 of 6

4 HMYN aims to: 1. Promote effective partnerships between agencies including NGO and Government, and the community to improve information sharing and support. 2. Address identified barriers for multicultural young people including those with a migrant background or refugee experience and the services that aim to support them, form subcommittees as required to address identified needs. 3. Raise the profile of Hunter Multicultural Youth Network and multicultural young people within the Newcastle LGA and Hunter Region in order to provide effective service provision to young people with a migrant background or refugee experience 4. To be a conduit to receive, disseminate and forward filter information to and from peak bodies and other committee and networks that works to support multicultural young people including those with a migrant background or refugee experience and/or services within the sector that support them. Standing items on HMYN s bi-monthly meetings: Youth leadership (how to support young people who want to do more in the community) Partnership projects Emerging local trends (where are the gaps in local service provision and how we can collaborate to bridge those gaps) Information share Initiatives that HMYN has be part of/coordinated: UNHCR Global Refugee Youth Consultations Welcome Ride 2 days of activities to welcome new young people to the Newcastle area and meet young people who have lived her for a while, social cohesion sponsored by Awesome local philanthropists. 5 Jo McGregor, STARTTS Presentation Jo McGregor, STARTTS Presentation Population groups in the Hunter: Afghani and African are the two most common (Congolese and Burundi, and a small amount from Sierra Lionne, Sudanese and Mauritania). About 250 Syrian people have settled in the region. Characteristics of famiies: o larger families (on average 7-8 children per family) o In African families there are high numbers of young people High need for youth services as there are more young people Settlement issues for young people and their communities: o Peer pressure to conform as there are not large communities o Not a lot of teachers with refugee or multicultural backgrounds o alienation o Impacts of war and impacts of feels of betrayal o High sensitivity to injustice o Lots of communitities who feel pressure to move to metro for jobs o Lots of unlinked refugees here who don t have family here in Newcastle o Impacts of trauma For more reading on the impact of trauma on children and young people: Bruce Perry, The Trauma Academy Jo used the term Culturally Intelligent organisations, as opposed to culturally competent. This definition embraces an idea that we need to keep developing our cultural competency practices, and that our skills evolve. The Privilege Walk an activity which highlights how people benefit or are marginalised by systems in our society. For more information about the use of this activity in your organisation Page 3 of 6

6 Dale Garbutt, Multicultural Youth & Family Worker Presentation Lydia Manusia and Tonkoh Kamara, Northern Settlement Services presentation Dale Garbutt Works within schools at Warratah Capmus - Callaghan College Lots of multicultural focus at Warratah EALD teaches, bi-lingual School Liaison Officer 18 students in IEC classes (2 ages groups) 60+ young people CALD/refugee young people 60+ Indigenous students with great Aboriginal support unit Dale s role: positive engagement with parents, community organisations, youth services, local businesses for work experience and referral services, and advocacy within school for students and parents Some of the initiatives to support multicultural young people and their families: o Homework centre o Multicultural supported playgroups o Community-based English tutoring matching volunteer tutors with young people Question: how did your position come about, what advocacy was done? EALD teacehrs were doing community liaison work but not getting paid for it so they and other services advocated for a specific position to be created Tonkoh Kamara & Lydia Manusia Northern Settlement Services There is a need to be innovative in service delivery methods NSS is part of the NSW Settlement Partnership Work with young people in the first 5 years of settlement Working with a lot of young girls from Afghan backgrounds: they were feeling isolated e.g. they didn t know how to go to the beach. This program runs like a drop in centre, as time went on it moved to a more multicultural girls group, boys generally have more access to service and programs so this had to be tailored to their needs. Issues they are dealing with: o Delays in citizenship o Delays in processing spousal visas Page 4 of 6

7 o Refusal of family visas Good practice as an organisation: o Partnerships with other organisations NSS runs study and homework centres in the Hunter region this is how the schools get around the lack of an IEC, other methods are home tutoring 4. Regional Settlement Update - Helen Larkin, Naviatas Helen Larkin Regional Settlement update Recent arrivals are predominantly Syrian, numbers are slower in January but we are soon to receive more arrivals Numbers in financial year: 175 people, Navitas have welcomed 60-70%, Hunter has been allocated 300 out of the 12,000 There is no way of knowing which cohort a person is from i.e. are they from the 13,750 or 12, MYAN NSW Update Refugee Youth Peer Mentoring co-design project MYAN NSW has been contracted by NSW Department of Premier and Cabinet to lead the co-design of a refugee youth peer mentoring project. MYAN NSW is working in partnership with STARTTS, SSI, Navitas English, and the Institute for Culture and Society, Western Sydney University (WSU). The purpose of this project is to design a peer mentoring scheme for refugee young people, in partnership with refugee young people. By engaging in participatory design methodologies, MYAN NSW aims to create a framework which draws on the assets of the community, complements existing programs and services and meets the real, rather than perceived, needs of refugee young people as they settle in Australia. Alex Long will send invitations to the sector to attend the various workshops and we are very keen to have involvement from regional areas. The consultancy report to DPC will form the basis of the next Request for Tender by DPC for organisations to implement the scheme. Page 5 of 6
