3 Police are taking international student issues seriously because safety is our priority and because of the nature of the economic impact it has on the state of NSW Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr Nick Kaldas

11 NSW is the second most diverse place in the world Over 246 language groups Over 500 Aboriginal Languages Culture of global tension -over 100 low intensity wars in the world at present Rapid movement of people including refugees world wide Migrants Tourists Students and transient travellers Impact of technology impacts crime, safety and prevention

12 Large range of cultures, ethnicity, age, gender and ability From over 160 countries 40% of total international student population are from India and China International students make up 20-30% of the student population 45 % University (100,000) 30% Vocational, Education, Training 20% ELICOS and other (English Language Courses)

14 First time young people are away from family and friends Study commitments and late working hours resulting in late night travel on public transport or walking home Vulnerability which may lead to exploitation in work or living arrangements Living in shared accommodation arrangements often with total strangers. The transient nature of their stay in Australia and Experience of policing from home country.

23 Crime Management Unit the engine room of the LAC Crime Prevention Officers the driver of crime prevention issues at LAC Level linking issue of international students with Multicultural Community Liaison Officers, Youth Liaison Officers and School Liaison Police. Crime Prevention cuts across crime types, population groups, community groups They address crime prevention by analysing patterns, places, people and spaces

24 A partnership is an arrangement where parties agree to cooperate to advance their mutual interests Engagement is for the purpose of working with community to achieve our organisational goals of: Increasing public safety Reducing crime and fear of crime and Building partnerships It is building the capacity of the community and police.

27 Engagement - Wollongong call me campaign..authentic and sustainable Issue - Student safety on campus(communication) NSWPF compiled safety messages Uni of Wollongong said nice message bad delivery (Consultation) Uni and police consulted with design and communications students Students then formed messages to reflect the safety tips created by police (Participation) Campaign resulted in communication and design students re created messages, developed graphics and pictures and planned with police implementation plan. Messages on sign boards, posters, placements, drink bottles etc (Engagement)

32 The campaign achieved high recognition and produced: Moving electronic posters postcards Drink bottles Drink holders Coasters Lanyards Fabric campus bags The partners were: campus security Local cafes and businesses Local bars Collaboration between graphic design, technology and media students Police

33 Community engagement for me, should be effective and meaningful. It s about forging relationships in good times, with the right people, who have the influence to get to the heart of the community in a time of crisis.
