This research program analyses forms of globalization-from-below, transnational practices. It focuses on participants identities and notions of (il) legality and (il) licitness. The aim of the program was to develop a comparative and interdisciplinary approach, and to produce new methods for studying transnational practices. It did include four trajectories in Asia. I am one of the four advisors. My role besides reviewing the applications, participating in the selection of the participant member, was to advise and guide the post-doc student in (her) field- work in Dubai. I also gave talks introducing Dubai and its Transnational work force to the team, participated in academic gatherings, brainstorming and collective advisory sessions, including a four days workshop in Trivandrum (23-27 January Illegal But Licit: Transnational Flows and Permissive Politics in Asia Kerala India). Consultant Social Sciences Research Council (SSRC) The Inter-Asian Connection Conference- February 21 to February 24 Was the local coordinator for SSRC in Dubai. Advised and facilitated their full partnership with the Dubai School of Government (DSG), their partial partnership with Zayed University-Dubai Campus, hosting two full Panel discussions (Inter-Asian Connections, Past, Present, and Future and Methodologies of Inter-Asian Studies), and Dubai University. Organized and followed all conference matters and logistics including getting funding from different sponsors (Individually generated an approximate of Dhs ). Organized a post-conference workshop in which many local academic institutions participated, among which Professor Jacqueline Armijo- Hussein representing Zayed University. Consultant MBRF Foundation The First Knowledge Conference Organized by Sheikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Foundation Was the academic consultant: writing proceedings and description, suggesting names of Arab renowned speakers, contacts and follow ups with conference panels, settings and performance. Conference had: 14 panels of discussion, 28 papers presented, 51 discussants to issues addressing Knowledge in the Arab World, its vision and challenges. Topics shed light on most pressing issues to address if we need to advance the Knowledge agenda in the Arab World, among them University development and capacity building of Arab Academic, Improving the Knowledge Public Sphere of discussion and freedom, addressing the educational shortcomings on all levels KG to Post-Graduate, improving research agenda, attracting and engaging the Arab Brain-drained
2 capacities and so on. On the side of the conference, worked on organizing an advisory group of National and local academics to bring in suggestions and strategic follow ups to the institution during and after the conference. Setting the background information (Develop conceptual framework, design study on Migration and Health Risk and HIV, Coordinate the mutlti-ethnic dimensions of the Research in Dubai). Presenting a report to all researchers and UNDP team in a workshop held in Colombo Sri Lanka (4 5 November 2007) Multi-Country Study of Vulnerabilities relating to Women Migrants and HIV: From Asia to the Middle East. Research Consultancy for the Dubai Statistical Center (DSC) Received a grant from the Dubai Statistical Center (previously affiliated with the Dubai Municipality) and currently operating as the statistical independent institution for the Government of Dubai. The Research grant was to present a policy oriented analysis to the Dubai 2005 census contextualizing Dubai s Women Status and Future Perspective. Aimed at developing a background assessment to Policy Makers and to The Newly established Research Center as part of a road map to future activities. (Forthcoming soon) Visiting Scholar at the Amsterdam School For Social Science Research (ASSR) A month spent at the ASSR doing research. Gave two lectures at the University: One on November 8, Between the Borders of the (IL)Legal and the (IL)Licit: Domestic Workers in Dubai And Kaleidoscopic Map of Hippest Change and Parallelism, the other November 15 on Doing Field work on Migrant Domestic Workers in Dubai. On November 23, gave a presentation entitled Thriving in the UAE as part of a training program organized by The Apiarian Global. Consultant The Executive Office Training government officials to do social research, Planning and Following a Social Research agenda for the Social Development Plan as part of the Dubai Strategy: Researching and Drafting the Social Development Plan Later announced by the Ruler of Dubai and partially published then. Most policies developed are used in the current implementation of the Social Programs addressed by the Social Development Authority as part of the Dubai Executive Council. Social Sciences and Research Grant Received grant from SSRC as part of the International Collaborative Research program entitled Migrant Domestic Workers in the Middle East: Becoming Visible in the Public Sphere. It included doing research, workshops and many public and field work at multisided places of the receiving countries in the MENA region (Dubai, Jordan, Lebanon, and Istanbul) and one in a sending country (Indonesia). The project resulted in many public speeches and appearances to all group members, along collaboration with local academic institutions, faculties, students, and researchers (Zayed was one of them). Chair of General Education Department Established and chaired the Department of General Education at what is now the University of Dubai (previously Dubai University College) Part of the Chamber of Commerce & Industry. Duties included: Designing the General Education Department at the time the University was undergoing the Accreditation process by the Ministry of Higher Education. Curriculum, to encompass a breadth of understanding to local society, religious diversity and national pressing agenda. Courses designed are until today adopted and taught under similar course description. Other: Designed and continuously assessed Department Academic programs, administrative affairs, faculty recruitment, faculty evaluation, among many other departmental and inter-departments duties. Also, Member of Academic Affairs Council, Chair of Faculty Committee, Member of College Curriculum Committee, Member of Marketing Committee, Advisor for students Master s dissertation. Consultant Family Sciences and Assistant Professor Worked initially as a consultant for the Family Sciences group establishing the department. Helped them in recognizing the social setting, needs, meeting with officials and eventually setting the program. Helped design 2
3 the first Introductory Course taught at the department and curriculum, including the background study for a research center serving the whole community. Taught the Introductory course for a full semester (three sections) in addition to introducing and teaching the first course on Globalization on campus. Introduced (Arab Women and Social Research) during a week in a special in between semesters program. This course explores the emergence of Globalization and its fast development across the world, and Dubai in specific. It tries to explore the different aspects of the process including such topics as the economics of Globalization, Cultural Globalization, Political Globalization, the role of Information revolution. The course will especially emphasize the different aspects contributing to the integration of Dubai in the World Technological Market. It explores the new role of Dubai, Dubai-Internet-City, and other newly launched projects. Finally, it evaluates how successful Dubai has been in dealing with the various challenges associated with the process of Globalization. The coverage includes a historical framework to the inception of UAE, its political system, economy, family, migration, population, women, youth, and the development of civil society. Course Number (GCUS 100) Course title: Culture and Society o Taught once a year (full or spring) from Sept 2001 until September 2003 o Brief Course description: The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the various aspects of social and cultural life. Selected topics are studied to illustrate particular modes and perspectives of culture and society. These topics include: culture, fieldwork methods and techniques, adaptation, language, kinship, descent and marriage, culture and personality, applied anthropology, culture and the future. Course Number (GUAS 100) Course title: Globalization o Taught once a semester alternatively with Contemporary International Issues (one of the tow is taught each semester at least in one section mostly evening whereby both morning and evening students can attend) o Brief: This course was designed to examine the emergence of globalization and its rapid expansion throughout the world. It explored its different aspects: economics, social, cultural, political and how it relates to the UAE in general. Course Number (GSOC 100) Course title: Sociology and Society o Taught once a semester (basically an introduction to Sociology) alternatively with Psychology and Society (intro to psychology) taught by someone else basically a psychologist o Brief: Introduced the fundamental theories and research methods used by sociologists and other social scientists to understand the world around them. The coverage included thinkers like: Ibn Khaldounm Drkheim, Marx, Weber, Talcott Parson, Foucault among others. Other theories studied: social interaction (and Symbolic Social Interaction), social stratification and inequality social institutions, ethno-methodology. Topics covered: doing research in Sociology, and types of research design, social institutions such as family, education, religion, government and the economy, communities, work place, population, environment, and rapid social change (technology and urbanism). Course Number (GCII 100) Course title: Contemporary International Issues o Taught once a semester alternatively with Globalization o Brief: To help students become aware of the larger dynamics of the world around them and help them interact with it. It encourages there activism and international consecutiveness. Coverage included: rising poverty in the world, population growth, global resources, global security issues, global treats, world organizations and roles (UN, World Bank, IMF, UNDP, ILO etc..) rising role of NGOs, women s organizations, women s movements, changing world state-system, technology and its impact on knowledge and science in the world today. Note: Teaching load was three courses or four sections - at times classes went over 50 students. In addition to administrative responsibilities as a chair of the department.
