1 REGARDING LAND-LEASE OF OUR FATHERLAND TO THE CHINESE CABAL AND ERRORS IN GOOGLE MAPS ABOUT THE BORDER REGION BETWEEN VIETNAM AND CHINA. THESE TWO ISSUES MUST BE ADDRESSED BY ALL VIETNAMESE AND CANNOT BE IGNORED. LAND-LEASE OF FATHERLAND TO THE CHINESE CABAL Ever since the Vietnamese Communists seized power in North Vietnam in 1945 and later South Vietnam in 1975, they have introduced various nefarious schemes which brought suffering to the people and tragedy to the country, but none would come close to their recent bizarre decision to grant to the Chinese the uncompensated use of hundreds of thousands of acres of land throughout Vietnam, including those in frontier provinces where in 1979 raged fierce battles between the invading armies of China and Vietnamese local defenders. Tens of thousands of Vietnamese patriots died in these battles to defend the fatherland. Now unjustifiably and secretly the Vietnamese Communist leaders at all levels from the Politburo down to local villages have conspired to give (sell) those lands away along with others elsewhere in the country to the Chinese. If the alarm of this act of treason had not been sounded by the retired generals Đồng Sĩ Nguyên and Nguyễn Trọng Vĩnh (tuanvietnamnet. 27/02/2010, bauxitevn 28/02/2010) and Nguyễn Hữu Anh (bauxitevn 09/03/2010) and the ten follow-up interviews posted in vietnamnet from 01/03/2010 to 31/03/2010, the Vietnamese in and out of Vietnam would have not known anything about it. This de facto giving away of our fatherland is no different from that of an act of uncaring parents who hand over the children to unscrupulous slave masters. The beneficiaries of this largesse of the Vietnamese Communists are the Chinese who have long dreamed of taking over Vietnam and assimilating the Vietnamese people. The pronouncements of the upper echelons of the Vietnamese Communist Party that they didn t know anything about this unconscionable act of treason didn t really pass muster with the Vietnamese people because we know how the Vietnamese Communist Party operates. Only the most trusted cadres are given positions of leadership in the administration of the provinces. In order to quiet the uproar of the common people and even of some cadres within the Vietnamese Communist Party, the Prime Minister Nguyễn Tấn Dũng has issued a directive to stop those land-lease contracts which have not yet been carried out. The Prime Minister s directive didn t mention at all the contracts which are being implemented. Neither was there any mention of punitive measures against those officials in the provinces who blithely sold our fatherland to the Chinese.

2 While the people in Vietnam voiced their anger and put forth petitions asking the government and the National Assembly to seize back the lands which were already leased away, those officials responsible for the reprehensible acts brazenly and shamelessly justified their behavior (For example: Nguyễn Văn Bình, Deputy Province Chief of Lạng Sơn Province, one of the sites where Vietnamese defenders put up ferocious fighting against the invading Chinese troops in 1979, in the interview conducted by vietnamnet). The Vietnamese proverb, Corrupt officials take care of one another is apropos here. We cannot ignore this wholesale selling of our beloved fatherland under the guise of the misnomer land-leases so that some corrupt officials could enrich themselves. We should not let this outrageous act of treason pass into oblivion and treat it as one of those dogs bit people news items. We must not regard the giving away of our sacred and beloved fatherland to the expansionist-minded Chinese as one of those gossip topics. The Vietnamese people must not continue practicing indifference to matters of national interest. It s time we question the slogan often used by the Vietnamese Communist Party: The Party cares about the country so the People don t have to worry. It s time we take full recognition of the fact that corrupt officials are confiscating the lands from the people and selling them to the Chinese, making the people become slaves and servants to the Chinese on the very lands of which they used to be owners. The news media in Vietnam must act in a responsible manner and treat the news as the topic of serious national interest instead of exploiting it as a sensational and entertaining news item. It has been two months since the appearance of the above-mentioned directive of the Prime Minister Nguyễn Tấn Dũng. We have not yet seen any results mentioned in the news media, not on the radio, not on TV, not in newspapers. There has been a complete blackout of follow-up news about the matter. The undersigned suggest the retired generals, Đồng Sĩ Nguyên, Nguyễn Trọng Vĩnh, Nguyễn Hữu Anh, and scholars and intellectuals in Vietnam as well as those living overseas continue asking the Prime Minister and the National Assembly about this matter. We must not let this matter pass into oblivion. We must demand the Prime Minister and the National Assembly take full measures against the treasonous act of the corrupt officials and inform the Vietnamese people what actions have been taken to rectify the situation. We must not accept nor do we agree to any act of giving hundreds of thousands of acres of our beloved fatherland to the Chinese, the lands our ancestors have shed blood to bequeath to all of us. Our ancestors didn t shed blood to defend those lands so today the corrupt officials could give them away to our historical enemy, the Chinese.

3 ERRORS IN GOOGLE MAPS ABOUT THE BORDER REGION BETWEEN VIETNAM AND CHINA Parallel to the National Geographic Society s recent designation of the Paracel Islands (Quần Đảo Hoàng Sa) as part of China, Google Company has made many errors in their Google Maps regarding the border region between Vietnam and China. These two developments have caused concern and anxiety in Vietnam. On March 16, 2010, the website Bauxite Vietnam was the first one to post the news about the errors in Google Maps. Later, many newspaper publications in Vietnam also raised the question to the government and the National Assembly. On March 20, 2010, Ms. Nguyễn Phương Nga, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, formally stated that Google Maps contained many errors and requested corrections. Various local officials attested to the errors contained in the Google Maps. Compared with the National Geographic Society s provocative and insulting designation of the Paracel Islands, the errors in the Google Maps are much more serious because of the latter s more widespread availability. On March 24, 2010, the undersigned wrote a letter to Google Company asking it to inform us the sources used for its maps while citing various errors contained in the maps, especially regarding the province Lào Cai. At the same time, we wrote to the Vietnamese Communist Party, the government, the National Assembly, and the news media in Vietnam asking them to join us in the protest against Google Company as they had done against National Geographic Society.

4 We have written three letters to Google. We also have written three letters to the Vietnamese Communist Party, the National Assembly, the Committee in charge of Border Regions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the news media in Vietnam asking them to request Google to release the sources of its maps and to stop disseminating for now the maps of the border region between Vietnam and China. For some unknown reasons, our protest against Google has not received the same endorsement and enthusiasm as our protest against National Geographic Society did. However, so far the website Hướng Dương TXD ( printed our letters of protest and the Radio France Internationale (RFI) interviewed us. ( Inside Vietnam, the website Bauxitevn printed all the letters we wrote to Google, Vietnamese Communist Party, the government, and the National Assembly. The news media in Vietnam have stopped discussing the errors in Google Maps once Ms. Nguyễn Phương Nga made formal announcement about the errors. We have received some promise from several news publications in Vietnam that they would disseminate our protest, but thus far the promise has not yielded fruit. As regards Google itself, it has maintained a stony silence regarding our letters. We are contemplating a direct contact with them at its headquarters in San Jose, California, U.S. in order to convey to it our displeasure at its cavalier indifference to a matter of national concern of the Vietnamese people. We are asking the scholars and intellectuals in and out of Vietnam, especially those living in San Jose area, to join us in the protest against Google. With regard to Vietnamese Communist Party, the government, and the National Assembly, we will continue writing to them, asking them to publicize the complete details of the border maps officially published by Vietnam, and to let the Vietnamese people know the results of their own protests to Google. As of the date of this letter May 10, 2010, on the website maintained by Google Maps ( for instance, if one taps thac ban gioc without tapping Viet Nam, the map will show thac ban gioc with all the notations in Chinese.
