1 IHH Humanitarian Relief Foundation Emergency Aid Report on Syria (MAY MAY 2012)

2 IHH Humanitarian Relief Foundation Emergency Aid Report on Syria (MAY MAY 2012) 1 It has been a year since the beginning of the public unrest in Syria. Fifteen children from the same family aged between 9 and 15 were arrested in March 2011 in Deraa for writing, We want freedom, we want democracy, on the walls of their school and they were subjected to torture and ill-treatment. When the relatives of these children took to the streets in protest of the incident, violence spread to other cities, turning into a revolt. News from the region despite a censorship policy from the Syrian administration indicates today that the number of people who were affected by the ongoing violence in Syria is tens of thousands. According to official figures as of April 2012, 13,000 people including 1,122 children were killed in the violence in Syria; however, unofficial figures suggest that the death toll is much higher than this. In addition, thousands of people are reported to be injured while 212,000 people were arrested and 160,000 people were forced to flee the country and take refuge in neighboring countries. 65,000 people are also reported to be missing. As the IHH Humanitarian Relief Foundation, we have been carrying out relief efforts since March 2011 for Syrian refugees in neighboring countries providing them with their basic needs such as accommodation, food and healthcare.
