3 CRISIS IN SUDAN
4 CRISIS IN SUDAN Since 2003, more than 450,000 African civilians have been killed in civil war in Sudan. In 2004, Secretary of State Colin Powell labeled the conflict Genocide. Almost 3 million Sudanese have been driven from their villages as the Janjaweed torches villages, destroys food, poisons water, murders men, rapes and murders women and girls. More than 2 million refugees now live in arid, desolate camps in Darfur and Chad, with li`le clean water, shelter, food, medicine, schools or work. Even in the camps, women and children are brutalized when they trek 3 5 days across the desert to gather firewood for cooking. Accosted by the Janjaweed, girls as young as 12 are raped, muplated and even killed.
