In 1973 the UFWOC gained full union status and became the United Farm Workers, AFL-CIO. Cesar Chavez led the farm workers from 1962 until his death in The Information and Research (I & R) department of the UFW serves as the research center for the Union, collecting materials of interest in many areas important to the organization. In addition, I & R collects the files of the various departments of the Union. Significant files in this collection include Service Center and Field Office correspondence. These materials reflect the range of services which the union provided for its members, including legal and immigration assistance, workman s compensation claims, and grievance mediation. Other important materials in this collection include papers concerning the difficulties the UFW had with the United Brotherhood of Teamsters relating to the 1973 dispute over sweetheart contracts that the Teamsters signed with many California growers.
