2 19 You Decide A Bilingual Newspaper July 31st, 2015 PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania (AP) Andres Guardado scored again, with no penalty kick needed this time, and his teammates finally managed some goals, too. Mexico ensured the final wouldn t come down to any calls in the last minutes with a 3-1 victory over upstart Jamaica for the CONCACAF Gold Cup title Sunday. Guardado had his fourth goal of the knockout rounds, and Jesus Corona and Oribe Peralta also scored as El Tri won its seventh Gold Cup. It was a convincing performance for coach Miguel Herrera and his team after some shaky play and contentious moments in the previous two games. Jamaica had made a rousing run to the final, stunning the U.S. in the semis to become the first Caribbean nation to reach the Gold Cup s championship match. And the Reggae Boyz looked as though they belonged in the opening minutes, keeping the pressure on Mexico The ONLY Digital 3D Mammography in the Valley 41% better detection rates of invasive breast cancers. But then El Tri started to find the gaps in the defense, and a yellow card for Jamaica helped lead to Mexico s first goal. The Reggae Boyz hadn t trailed since early in the second half of their Gold Cup opener. Mexico, which already held the record for most Gold Cup titles, is 7-1 in finals. We won a game today, but we don t accomplish our goal yet, Herrera said. The only way Mexico had been able to score in the knockout rounds before Sunday was on penalty kicks, all three by Guardado. And two of those came on late, questionable calls against Costa Rica and Panama, respectively. Guardado, voted top player of the tournament, had also been the last Mexico player to score on anything other than a penalty with his goal in the 88th minute against Trinidad and Tobago in the final group stage match. Herrera fired as Mexico coach MEXICO CITY (AP) Mexican national team coach Miguel Herrera was fired Tuesday following a television reporter s claim that the man known as El Piojo punched him. The ouster came just two days after Herrera led Mexico to victory in the CONCACAF Gold Cup. But Decio de Maria, who on Saturday becomes president of the Mexican Soccer Federation, said the incident with the journalist was not in keeping with the spirit of fair and respectful competition the organization espouses. In a statement, Herrera apologized to his players, his staff, fans, the federation and the media for his conduct in the painful incident I had with a commentator. It is clear to me that this is not the attitude that a coach for the Mexican national team should take, despite having received all manner of criticisms, offenses and mockery of my family and my person, it said Table of Contents SPORTS: Mexico wins 7th Gold Cup title with 3-1 win over Jamaica SPORTS: Herrera fired as Mexico coach RELIGION: Hispanics energized by pope s first visit to US STATE: Washington gets $65 million in first-year taxes from marijuana POLITICS: Trump loved and hated by Hispanics in border city 14 LATIN AMERICA: El Chapo is no saint, but at home is seen as generous 13 COMMUNITY: Opera event set in Pasco COLUMN: From my Balcony: There are apps for everything and for everyone! 3 July 31st, 2015 You Decide A Bilingual Newspaper 18 NEW YORK (AP) Vianel Garcia told family members they could sleep on the floor of her East Harlem hair salon when Pope Francis visits the city in September so they can try to catch a glimpse of him when he makes a stop at a school across from her business. Enthusiasm is growing among Hispanic Catholics in New York, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. over Argentine-born Pope Francis first U.S. visit. Many are inquiring about tickets to see him during his stops in the three cities, with many planning to attend the World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia, where the pope with speak. My clients also want to come, but we don t have enough space, said the 35-yearold Dominican stylist who said she will hang a big sign on the front door welcoming the pope on Sept. 25. Some are organizing workshops at their churches about the pope s teachings and how they apply to immigrants. There is this simplicity he has to tell RELIGION Hispanics energized by pope s first visit to US people things like they really are, said Alma Reyes, a 53-year-old Mexican immigrant who cleans homes and is planning to travel from New York to Philadelphia to hear the pope speak. He speaks from the heart. He is spontaneous. In her Queens church, Saint Leo, Reyes is helping organize a workshop to talk about the pope s teachings. The talks will be based on Pope Francis exhortation: The Joy of the Gospel. Many here are undocumented, and this encyclical letter talks about all that. The racism, the difficulties... these are issues that affect the Hispanic community, Reyes said. Pope Francis charisma and messages resonate among Latin American immigrants. The Pope has often condemned the indifference over illegal immigration Race, National Origin, Color, Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, Religion, Creed, Veteran or Military Status, Sex, Marital Status, Public Assistance Income, Disability, Familial Status, or Age? According to census data, 55 million Hispanics live in the U.S., making it the nation s largest minority group. The number of immigrants living illegally in the country is about 11 million people, about 78 percent of them Hispanic, according to the Pew Research Institute. Pope Francis is due to arrive in Washington on Sept. 22 and then travel to New York on Sept. 24 and Philadelphia on Sept. 26. He will visit children at Our Lady Queen of Angels, a Catholic school in the Latino neighborhood of East Harlem. Later, he will meet in the school s gymnasium with immigrants and refugees who have been assisted by Catholics Charities, said the Archdiocese of New York. (The Pope) is the son of an immigrant. He understands the problems of immigrants, and knowing that they are waiting now for immigration reform, said Argentinian priest Carlos Mullins, who has lived in New York for about 40 years. For sure he will talk about that, Mullins said. Latinos from across the country are expected to travel to see the pope at one of his stops. Many in the community feel admiration, not only because he is from Latin America, but because of his focus on poverty, on the least fortunate, said Abel Nunez, executive director of the Central American Resource Center in Washington. 4 17 You Decide A Bilingual Newspaper July 31st, 2015 SEATTLE, Washington (AP) Washington state took in $65 million in tax revenue from the recreational marijuana market during the first 12 months since it became legal to produce and sell, according to data released by state regulators this week. The revenue was generated by cannabis sales of more than $260 million from June 2014 to June 2015, according to data released by the Washington State Liquor Control Board, which oversees the distribution of cannabis. Voters in Washington state as well as in Colorado approved measures legalizing personal possession and consumption of marijuana in 2012, ushering in the licensing and taxation of retail stores that offer a range of marijuana products to adults. Despite remaining against federal law, possession of small amounts of marijuana is also legal in the District of Columbia, Oregon and Alaska. In Washington state, customers who are 21 and older are legally allowed up to 1 ounce (28 grams) of marijuana before buying more. They also can buy up to 16 ounces (454 grams) of potinfused product in solid form, or up to 72 ounces (2 kg) of marijuana-infused product in liquid form. Retailers sold more than 23,000 pounds of marijuana of the 31,000 pounds produced in Washington during the year, state data showed. In April, Washington Governor Jay Inslee, a Democrat, signed a measure that overhauls the state s medical marijuana market, reconciling the long unregulated system with the state s recreational pot industry. 6 15 You Decide A Bilingual Newspaper July 31st, 2015 LAREDO, Texas (AP) There was an audible gasp from the gathered crowd as Donald Trump s 757 lifted off the tarmac. Oh my God. Wow, said Gina Gil, 48, after an excited shriek, reaching for her 11-year-old-nephew. I think it s a historic moment, ma am. Seriously, I really do. Gil was referring to Trump s visit Thursday to Laredo, Texas, a small city on the U.S.-Mexico border where the Republican presidential candidate spent less than an hour touring the border, bragged to reporters about the danger he faced, proclaimed Hispanics love him, and stopped traffic with a presidentialsized motorcade. Yet beyond the spectacle The Donald seems to create wherever he goes, the billionaire businessman s visit exposed evidence of a divided community whose overwhelmingly Hispanic population both decried Trump as racist and cheered his hardline immigration views. Interviews during and after the whirlwind tour with more than a dozen local residents underscored the danger Trump represents to the GOP s relationship with Hispanic voters and his appeal to a vocal segment of frustrated voters, many Hispanics among them, who see a glaring problem on the nation s southern border that requires attention. Jessica Gonzalez, 79, a retired housewife who was born and raised in Laredo, said she d watched as the city she d grown up in had changed, with restaurants replaced with Mexican food and new people coming in. I think he s right, she said in the parking lot of a local CVS. All we have is POLITICS Trump loved and hated by Hispanics in border city Supporters reach to great Republican presidential hopeful Donald Trump during a visit to Laredo, Texas, on Thursday, July 23, people from foreign countries.... It s not like it used to be. Gonzalez a Democrat and her husband used to travel across the border frequently to shop and for entertainment, but are now afraid to cross because of violence from the drug cartels. I want to go down and say: Donald Trump, you re on fire in Laredo! Because everybody feels what you think! she said. Outside Obregon s Mexican Restaurant, Enrique Harrington Ramon, 75, said he felt Spanish-speaking immigrants take advantage of us in Laredo, and said people are responding to what Trump says because it s the truth. I am sick of walking into a store and hearing en que le puede ayudar? What country are we in? he said. Others in this growing city of about 250,000, where 95.6 percent of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino in 2010, lashed out at Trump, who described some Mexican immigrants in the country illegally as rapists and criminals during his announcement speech last month and has refused to apologize. I wish he wouldn t come down here, said Raul Gonzalez, 65, a retired trailer and truck mechanic who was born and raised in Laredo. He s very disrespectful to Latinos. Laredo-born Tony Flores, 82, who was wearing a cap that identified him as a Korean War veteran, said of Trump: He is poisonous. He is hatred. 7 July 31st, 2015 You Decide A Bilingual Newspaper 14 LATIN AMERICA El Chapo is no saint, but at home is seen as generous BADIRAGUATO, Mexico (AP) People living in the hometown of drug lord Joaquin El Chapo Guzman have heard stories of his benevolence: gifts of medicine for the poor, deliveries of drinking water to stormstricken towns. But finding anyone who s actually received or even seen such a gift is another matter. In Badiraguato, the small mountain town that is part of Guzman s rags-to-crime riches mythology, none of the two dozen people interviewed by The Associated Press could point out evidence of his legendary largesse. I don t see a single building producing jobs, a single piece of public works, a soccer field, a sewer, a school, water systems, a clinic or hospital, not a single one that you can say was built by drug traffickers or their money, Mayor Mario Valenzuela said. If Guzman or his cartel had invested in their hometowns, he said, they d look different: They would have paved roads or drainage systems, but they don t. Guzman s escape on July 11 from a prison near Mexico City has focused attention again on Badiraguato, the county seat of a township that includes the hamlet of La Tuna, where El Chapo s mother still lives. The roads to La Tuna are still washed-out dirt tracks, and Badiraguato itself has none of the flashy accoutrements of money luxury car dealerships, palatial mausoleums, acres of fancy, gated communities of new homes, or dozens of street moneychangers offering cheap dollars that are abundant in Culiacan, the state capital, 1 1/2 hours away. The town s big projects include a new balcony for the town hall that looks out over the sleepy square dominated by a 19th-century church, where residents seek shade from the punishing Sinaloa sun. Tucked into the foothills where the coastal stretches of flat corn and tomato fields meet the imposing mountains of the Sierra Madre, Badiraguato remains mired in poverty, Valenzuela acknowledges that many of the township s residents make a living growing marijuana or opium poppies. Guzman grew up here, the son of a poor In this July 20, 2015 photo, a car drives past the entrance to the town of Badiraguato, Mexico. famer. His rise as a crime boss has been surrounded by mythology, a Hollywood version of an old-school Mafioso ruthless, but yet honorable. Songs have been written in his honor and some locals extol him as a Robin Hood-type figure who is careful to leave innocents out of his deadly score-settlings. Chapo Guzman isn t violent, Valenzuela said about a man accused of hundreds of murders. He doesn t shoot it out with the government. That s unlike the reputation of the New Generation Jalisco cartel to the south, which is alleged to have brought down a military helicopter May 1 with a rocketpropelled missile. Or the Zetas, who ve fueled their notoriety in central Mexico with grisly beheadings and the hanging of bodies across public highways. Or Guerreros Unidos, the cartel alleged to have killed 43 college students last fall. For many who live in the state that gives name to Guzman s Sinaloa cartel, he is seen as a lesser evil. Gabriel, a civil engineer, returned home recently to Culiacan after a year and a half working on road projects in the central state of Zacatecas, which is controlled by Mexico s bloodiest cartel, the Zetas. There, he said, gunmen pulled him over and demanded he either pay protection money or get out of town. They are worse. They are indiscriminate. They ll kill seven people just to get the one they want, he said. The Sinaloa cartel, he said, leaves ordinary people alone, there is a certain respect. Still, the man in his 30s wouldn t give his last name for fear of reprisals. Enter the Sweepstakes! Win an ipad Mini 2 See website for details No purchase necessary to enter or win.

Ken Dear Ken, In my mind, there s no such thing as a good credit card. My advice is to go ahead and cancel them. When you stop borrowing money and don t have any open accounts, your credit score will slowly disappear. The big thing is that you don t want to be caught in no-man s land in terms of a credit score. You want either a fabulous one, which means you re in debt all of the time, or you want no score because you don t have any open accounts. By the way, did you know that you can still qualify for a mortgage, even with no credit score? There are still mortgage companies out there that will do manual underwriting. It takes a little extra effort, but in my mind that s a small price to pay. Cancel the cards, Ken. I ve never met a millionaire who prospered thanks to credit cards and their gimmicks! Dave
