Operated from Norway with Norwegian crew and core scientific staff In close cooperation with FAO, uncoupled from Norwegian fishery interests, flying the UN-flag First vessel left Norway in 1974

19 NEW PROGRAM: FISH FOR DEVELOPMENT 3 main areas: Education and research (including the EAF Nansen program) Business development (including aquaculture) Management and legal issues
20 1.Education and research (including the EAF Nansen program) Continue and expand the EAF-Nansen program Extend the Hjort center for ecosystem dynamic studies in Bergen to provide guidance to researchers from development countries in utilizing data from the Nansen data base. (Part of the new EAF-Nansen Program: The EAF-Nansen Science Consortium) Technical training center for fisheries and aquaculture in Africa
21 The Nansen Science Consortium Main goal: to increase the scientific output from the Nansen-data (publications) Secretariat located at IMR cooperating with the Hjort centre The work will be organized in regional working groups inspired by the NansClim model (Benguela). Budget: about 5 mill NOK/year
22 Technical training center for fisheries and aquaculture in Africa Goal: to increase the capacity in technical diciplines related to fisheries research and management Will offer a selection of short courses (1-3 weeks) e.g. hydroacoustics, stock assessment, survey design, fisheries statistics..
23 New Nansen program phase ( ): Fish resources still central but wider scope, including monitoring the state of the marine ecosystems, biodiversity, acidification and impacts of climate change.
